  2. Simile Example • This slide is just to look at and help you learn what an example a simile would be: • brave as a soldier

  3. Simile • Copy this into your spiral (on the worksheet) • Simile = a comparison between two unlike things using like or as • Which of these is a simile? (write in spiral) *pretty as a picture *beautiful rose *you are so pretty

  4. Simile continued… 3. Now, please write FIVE examples of simile on the worksheet (answer #3).

  5. Metaphor • This slide is just to look at and give you an example: • Your smile is sunshine.

  6. Metaphor 4. Copy this into your spiral: - metaphor = one thing described as though it were something else (NOT using like/as) • Which of these is a metaphor? *it’s raining cats and dogs *dogs are like sunny days *dogs are great companions

  10. Personification 9. In this paragraph, there are 3 examples of personification. Write them on your paper. Animals tell many tales. In most cases, it’s an animal’s tail that serves a helpful function. For example, the tail of a bird helps it fly. A porcupine uses his tail for a weapon. The tail shouts out, “Don’t mess with me”. A horse, on the other hand, will only use his tail in defense against flies and other bugs. The tail stands proud and tall warning bugs to fly away or else.

  12. Onomatopoeia • Please copy this definition onto your worksheet: Onomatopoeia = use of a word whose sound imitates or suggests its meaning 11. In the following paragraph, please write ALL the words you find that are onomatopoeia…. (next slide)….

  13. Onomatopoeia Wham! The roof collapsed in the freak hail storm. Whoosh went the wind and the rain fell on the remaining tin roof panels in a plop, plop, plop fashion. Grrrr…the damage to the house will be extensive and expensive. If only the loud clatter of the hail would stop. Then, at least I could think. Klunk! Great, now what, I thought! I looked around the corner and I couldn’t belive it…..

  14. Onomatopoeia • Now, please write a paragraph (at least 7 sentences --- can be more) where you use least 7 words from the words below. Write your paragraph on the next page in your spiral. Alliteration • On your “Alliteration/Foreshadowing” page in your spiral, please write this: • Alliteration = repetition of same or similar consonant sounds in words close together in writing 14. Write a five word string alliteration sentence using the consonant D. Ex: Daring Debby dove into the deep dark water. • Now do another sentence with the letter T. (like you did for #14) • Now, another sentence with the letter M. • Finally, a sentence using the letter B.

  19. Foreshadowing continued… Francis couldn’t wait to go to her Junior Prom. She’d purchased her dress, had her hair done, and was anxiously waiting in her room for her boyfriend to call and tell her when he’d arrive. They were to leave at 8:00, but her boyfriend, Rick, didn’t call. By 8:30, Francis was nervous. By 9:00, she was getting very upset. Finally, at 9:30, the doorbell rang. Rushing downstairs, she opened the door to see a police officer standing on her porch…..

Imagery • Write this definition on your “IMAGERY/HYPERBOLE” page: imagery = language that appeals to the senses (ex: sounds, smells) --- like sensory details • Write the BEST line of imagery below: *bright, blue, peeking in between the clouds, the sky could barely be seen *the sky was blue, bright and not easily seen as the day went on *the wind wafted the slight smell of oranges though the air as the crisp breeze touched my cheek on the chilly, crisp December day

  25. First Person/Third Person • For each of these examples, please write if it is FIRST PERSON perspective or THIRD PERSON perspective (look back at your definitions). Write on your “PERSON/PARAPHRASE” page. • One can hardly get away from all the commercials during the Superbowl. • I can’t wait to watch the Superbowl on Sunday. • Because she didn’t want to go to school, Sandy’s mom let her stay home for one day. • Mr. Cimino was very happy when all the kids picked up their lunch trays without being reminded. • No one is able to always get 100% on every assignment. • Because I love to swim, I cannot wait to go to Hawaii this summer.

Paraphrase • In your spiral, please copy this: Paraphrase = restatement of writing where the meaning is expressed in other, usually less, words Susie was very upset about the B she earned in math. She’d worked very hard, studied, and come in for extra help. Still, she was having a lot of trouble getting the concepts in algebra. She really didn’t know how to do any better, but she knew she would keep trying… (questions on next slide)….

She worked and worked, but still earned a B. • Susie worked hard, but was frustrated at her inability to figure out the algebra concepts. She’d keep trying. • Susie knew she had to keep trying in algebra, but was frustrated by how difficult it was. She tried hard, but couldn’t keep up. Finally, Susie realized she’d probably just always earn a B or C.

EX: Lion King – theme is “circle of life” – basically that everything has a time, place, and we all have the same experience of life and death. EX: Freak the Mighty (book example since we’ve all read it): A theme = friendship is forever OR valuing difference

Idiom • On your “Idiom” page, please write: Idiom = an expression with a different meaning from the literal words • Which of these is an idiom– copy all that are idioms onto your paper: *Claire turned a blind eye to her friend’s stealing. *The assignment was so easy that it was a piece of cake. *Claire looked away when she saw her friend stealing. *Danny was in tremendous, healthy, fit shape. *Danny was fit as a fiddle.

Idiom continued… Continued… • What do these idioms ACTUALLY mean? • If I buy that new car, it might break the bank. • “Here, let me lend you a hand,” said Stan when he found out about Ben’s bad grade in algebra. • “I don’t know why Chuck is dragging his feet about asking Mindy to the dance.” • Brandy has been down in the dumps for about three weeks.

  41. Idiom continued… • Why would it be difficult for a person from another country, who was learning English, to understand idioms? 49. On the next pages, please read the short story. Then, please write down TWENTY of the 25 idioms located within the text. We use this type of language all the time and don’t even realize it.

  42. “I got such a kick out of watching our students present High School Musical,” said Mrs. Addison. “Those kids mad the singing look like a piece of cake and the dancing look easy as pie. And the acting? I thought they would be in over their heads, but they really pulled it off.” “You’re right,” said Miss Trible. “The costumes were just to die for, and the scenery was so great it must have cost and arm and a leg. This show became the hottest ticket in town!” “I really thought the kids were biting off more than they could chew,” said Mr. Ganion, the director. “If I’d had my druthers, they would have picked something easier. To make it even worse, some kids were really bend out of shape because they didn’t’ get the roles they wanted. Then, the flu hit, and half the cast was under the weather for many of the rehearsals. But they kept their nose to the grindstone, and there at the end they were really burning the midnight oil.”

  43. “They were getting on each others’ nerves during dress rehearsal,” said the musical director, Mrs. Webster, “and a lot of them were rubbing each other the wrong way. I was crossing my fingers that a couple of them didn’t tear into each other.” “But others were certainly getting along well. The leading man lost his head over the leading lady,” said Mr. Ganion. “Really? I was in the dark about that,” said Mrs. Webster. “I guess I really let the cat out of the bag. They were quite the item. However, I thought he was going to fall apart at the seems when he saw her leave with one of the other guys one night. But, they were just friends. It turns out she was head over heals in love with the leading man, too.” “The two of them really brought the house down when they came out for bows at the end of the show,” said Mrs. Addison. “It was wonderful.”

  45. Allusion • Please write on your “Allusion” page: Allusion = reference to something known from literature, history, sports, science, etc. EXAMPLE: It’s raining so hard we’ll need Noah’s Ark (Noah’s ark is a Biblical/literary reference)

  46. Allusion…continued This is an allusion: Frankie didn’t like to spend money on anything or anyone. He was a real Scrooge. 51. What does this mean? Being a Scrooge? This is an allusion: “Stop bugging me about how my place looks. I don’t live in the TajMahal. 52. What does this mean? The TajMahal reference? This is an allusion: I don’t think I can help you get out of your predicament. After all, I’m not Superman. 53. What does this mean? Not being Superman?
