Two mobile technologies rule the world

Two mobile technologies rule the world

Requirements cdma customer

Requirements CDMA customer

  • True Global Roaming

    Access to mobile networks independent of the technology

  • User experience

    Simple and clear instructions how to bridge the characteristics of both technologies

    By preference same services while roaming as at home including SMS, Voice Mail, Email and Internet access

  • Same rates in same area

    No complicated difference in rates and rate models between technologies used

The solution

The Solution

Inter Standard Roaming

  • Cross technology roaming (CDMA-GSM)

  • Seamless roaming (one number, one bill and one device)

  • Voice, SMS, Voice Mail, Email and Internet Access

General overview interstandard roaming

General overview InterStandard Roaming

Solution A:

Both signalling conversion, provisioning (IIF) and gateway to worldwide GSM coverage

General overview interstandard roaming1

General overview InterStandard Roaming

Solution B:

Same as full service however the conversion platform (IIF) is managed by the CDMA carrier. Access to GSM either by GSM sponsor or by bilateral GSM roaming agreements.

General overview InterStandard Roaming

Solution C:

Both the conversion platform (IIF) as the GSM roaming agreements are managed internally. This is the case when the CDMA carrier also runs a GSM network.

Interstandard roaming services

Interstandard Roaming Services

  • Full service

    Both signalling conversion, provisioning and gateway to worldwide GSM coverage

    Technical and commercial relation as it were a CDMA roaming agreement

  • Roaming Broker service

    Same as full service however the conversion platform is managed by the CDMA carrier.

  • Service based on bilateral agreements

    The conversion platform is managed by the CDMA carrier, but (bilateral) GSM roaming agreements are made one by one

  • Internal service

    Both the conversion platform as the GSM roaming agreements are managed internally. This is the case when the CDMA carrier also runs a GSM network.

Offered services

Offered Services

  • Voice (MO/MT)

  • Voicemail

  • SMS

  • Data

  • Smartcards (SIM / R-UIM)

  • Handsets

Voice

Voice

  • Features:

    • Make and receive calls;

    • Reachable with the same number as at home;

    • Call forwarding is possible.

  • Points of attention:

    • For receiving calls, MSRN ranges must be implemented at home operator;

    • Quality of carriers (selected by home operator);

    • No SLA available on roaming partner network, always on best effort.

Voice mail

Voice mail

  • Features:

    • Call forwarding to voicemail system;

    • Call forwarding available conditional and unconditional;

    • For conditional forwarding there are several options available:

      • Call forwarding when busy

      • Call forwarding when not available

      • Call forwarding when not answered

  • Points of attention:

    • Some countries do not allow forwarding to different country code number then the country code from the sponsor operator;

    • Unique voicemail number or one number for voice and voicemail.

SMS

  • Features:

    • Send and receive SMS between:

      • End users of sponsor operator (incl. inter standard roaming users)

      • End users of SMS Interworking partners

      • End users of home network

  • Points of attention:

    • Footprint of SMS IW partners is in most cases different than roaming footprint;

    • Difference between CDMA and GSM regarding maximum length of message (140 vs. 160 characters);

    • Proper working of concatenated SMS.

Inter standard roaming gsm sponsor

Data

  • Features:

    • Access to GSM broadband data standards;

    • Internet traffic can be terminated at sponsor network, customer specific traffic (eg blackberry, email) can be terminated at home network;

  • Points of attention:

    • Footprint of data roaming partners is in most cases different than the voice roaming footprint.

    • Currently there are 4 standards of package data in GSM (GPRS, EDGE, UMTS and HSDPA). Not everywhere all 4 standards are available.

    • APN’s should be defined

    • Public vs. Private IP addresses

    • CRX vs. GRX for bearer traffic

Data speeds

Data speeds

  • GPRS (2,5G)

    • First generation of mobile packet data on GSM. Speed on average 32KB/s

  • EDGE (2,75G)

    • Overlay technology on existing GPRS network offering more efficiency in transmission coding. Result: 3x faster as GPRS, same coverage area.

    • GPRS is not offered by all GSM operators

  • UMTS (3G)

    • New network roll-out based on W-CDMA technology. Speed has been increased to max. 384 KB/s downlink and 64 KB/s downlink.

  • HSDPA (3,5G)

    • Overlay technology on existing UMTS network. Downlink speed is currently 1.8 MB/s or 3.6 MB/s, uplink 384 KB/s.

Smartcards sim r uim

Smartcards (SIM / R-UIM)

  • Features:

    • Access to GSM world;

    • Single GSM technology on SIM card;

    • Combination of two technology profiles (CDMA & GSM) on one smartcard (R-UIM).

  • Points of attention:

    • Choice between SIM or R-UIM

    • Profile of GSM part can be pre-programmed (eg. PIN-code, service numbers, welcome text, language, etc)

    • Artwork

Handsets

Handsets

  • Features:

    • Single mode GSM handset

    • Dual mode GSM/CDMA handset

  • Points of attention:

    • Choice between single mode and dual mode;

    • Price of handset

    • Available GSM frequencies on handset (single band, multi band)
