UNCLASSIFIED Promoting Fruit Export Links • Assessment 24DEC12 • Afghanistan’s top three exports • Carpets, Fresh Fruit, Dried Fruit • Facilitated meeting between USMIL 426th Civil Affairs and four key Kabul fruit exporters at Kabul Chamber of Commerce, Kabul exporter concerns: • Trade obstacles shipping through Pakistan • Ignorance of international quality standards • Branding and packaging • Traders are currently shipping to Pakistan and some test trades have occurred to Dubai. • 426th knows broker selling to China and India. • Taking Action • Planning to link US based fruit broker & traders. • Begin organizing test trades for fall 2013: grapes, apples, pomegranates. • 426th to assist shipping through Pakistan • Facilitate due diligence • Shipping specifications and requirements • Packaging review • Cultivate relationship with US broker leading to traders meeting in Dubai with fruit samples to cement grape test trade in August 2013 Agriculture - Kabul 24-DEC-12
