  1. All You Need to Know about Metal 3D Printing

  2. Introduction • In earlier days, printing as a process only meant printing document. Even today, many people think that printer can only print documents. • But technology has advanced to a level that in current scenario, printers can also print objects. • This technology is known as 3D printing. With the help of 3D printers you can print a digital image into a product. • Since the inception of this technology, printing customizable designs, vibrant colours and quality printing is attracting many businesses.

  3. Tools and Equipment Used for 3D Printing • Plastic jet printing is the latest technology that is used for 3D printing. • It is a kind of manufacturing process in which a soft plastic or metal sheet is pushed through a die to produce a continuous bead of material. • PJP is a similar process as of Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM). But FDM is majorly used for industrial use and PJP are made for normal consumers. • In order to print through PJP, first we need to create 3D model using CAD (Computer aided designing) software and save as STL file. • STL is an industry-standard file extension that “slices” your 3D model in a stack of cross-section. The file is then sent to software which is automatically supported with the machine.

  4. Growing Significance of Metal 3D printing • In the past few years, the popularity and scope of metal 3D Printing has increased to a considerable extent. • It is important to note that every material offers a unique and distinct set of aesthetic and practical properties that are suited to various products. • It can be jewellery, prototypes, kitchenware, functional parts or miniatures. • The reason behind unprecedented popularity of this printing technology is that 3D serially printed parts are available for mass adoption. • In many instances, it was found that 3D printed parts were much more impressive and good when compared with the parts being manufactured using traditional methods.

  5. Growing Significance of Metal 3D printing • In the manufacturing processed used in olden times, making plastic and metal objects would have been considered as a wasteful process. • A lot of surplus and chunky parts were used. When metal parts are manufactured by the aircraft makers, almost 90 percent of the material was thrown away. In case of 3D printed parts of metal, not only lesser energy is used but the wastage is also reduced to a minimum. • This way, the finished product with 3D printing is 60 percent lighter than a machined part. Billions of dollars are saved by the aviation industry through reduction in weight, especially on fuel. • 3D metal printing can also be used in homes in Melbourne. It serves a variety of purposes.

  6. Why to Use Metal 3D Printing? • Unique appearance and metallic finish • Perfectly suitable for statues, jewellery, artefact replicas, or home hardware • High robustness and durability • Low degree of flexibility, dependent on the design of the structure • Not soluble • 195°C – 220°C, General print temperature range • Not considered food safe

  7. Why to Use Metal 3D Printing? • During cooling, very little shrinkage • No requirement for heated bed • High printing difficulty, requires nozzle temperature to be fine-tuned, post-processing and flow rate.

  8. Use of Home Printer for Metal 3D Printing • It is significant to understand that achieving metal 3D prints is slightly difficult. There may be a need to upgrade the 3D printer nozzle. • The metal filament used in 3D printing suffers from quick wear and tear. • Thus, there may be a need to replace 3D printer nozzle on a regular basis to continue enjoy amazing results. • The technology has been making a lot of changes in the printing industry.
