Ophthalmology Services • Cataract Surgery • Medicare reimburses approx $1300 for facility fee • Equipment expensive for small hospital • Can rent or lease equipment and pay on per case basis- helps decrease initial outlay of capital • Cataract Surgery • Supplies and instruments for surgery can also be included in so called mobile surgery or can purchase some supplies on own like sutures or viscolelastic or “packs” • Short procedure time

  3. Ophthalmology Services Benefits • Income for hospital without large outlay of capital • Exposes patients to hospital and may return for further services • Ancillary services- anesthesia, blood work, X- rays, EKG’s etc. • Good for community

  4. Ophthalmology Services • Can get creative- get local optometrists involved and possible invest in equipment to keep services locally • Cataract patients in most cases do not like to travel

  5. Ophthalmology Services • What can OSU do for me ? • Residents are willing to see your trauma and ER call patients • Willing to do surgery at your facility • Mobile screenings – Bus has ability to take retinal photos for interpretation • Cataract screening
