5. Religions in China • Chinese Buddhism • refers collectively to the various schools of Buddhism that have flourished in China after introduction from India. Many of these schools integrated the ideas of Confucianism, Taoism and gradually became a natural part of Chinese civilization. • Buddhism has played an enormous role in shaping the mindset of the Chinese people, affecting their aesthetics, politics, literature, philosophy and medicine.

6. Religions in China (Cont) • Taoism • Taoism refers to a variety of related philosophical and religious traditions and concepts The word 道, Tao means "path" or "way“. Taoist propriety and ethics emphasize the Three Jewels of the Tao: compassion, moderation, and humility. • Taoist thought generally focuses on nature, men-cosmos correspondence (天人相应), health, longevity, wu wei (action through inaction), liberty, and spontaneity. • Chinese alchemy (including Neidan), astrology, cuisine, several Chinese martial arts, Chinese traditional medicine, feng shui, immortality, and many styles of qigong breath training disciplines have been intertwined with Taoism throughout history.
