Some basic facts about China • Over 5000 written history • 4 great inventions: compass, printing, explosives and paper-making • No. 3 trading power • The third largest in area – 9.6 million square kilometers • The largest foreign exchange reserves • The most rapidly growing economy for the past decades • The biggest trading partner for most of the Asian countries and the major trading partner for most of the economic powers in the world

  5. Religions in China • Chinese Buddhism • refers collectively to the various schools of Buddhism that have flourished in China after introduction from India. Many of these schools integrated the ideas of Confucianism, Taoism and gradually became a natural part of Chinese civilization. • Buddhism has played an enormous role in shaping the mindset of the Chinese people, affecting their aesthetics, politics, literature, philosophy and medicine.

  6. Religions in China (Cont) • Taoism • Taoism refers to a variety of related philosophical and religious traditions and concepts The word 道, Tao means "path" or "way“. Taoist propriety and ethics emphasize the Three Jewels of the Tao: compassion, moderation, and humility. • Taoist thought generally focuses on nature, men-cosmos correspondence (天人相应), health, longevity, wu wei (action through inaction), liberty, and spontaneity. • Chinese alchemy (including Neidan), astrology, cuisine, several Chinese martial arts, Chinese traditional medicine, feng shui, immortality, and many styles of qigong breath training disciplines have been intertwined with Taoism throughout history.
