Tanakh1) Torah a) Genesis – contains the stories of creation and stories of the patriarchsb) Exodus – story of the Jewish escape from slavery c)Leviticus – contains Jewish worship and rules d)Numbers – the story of the Jewish experience in the desert e)Deuteronomy – another set of rules and explanation of the whole torah

  3. 2) Prophets a) Former Prophets – referred to as the Judges and Kings of Israel – Saul, David, and Solomonb) Latter Prophets – ones who passed judgement on Israel and reminded them of their promises to God – Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel

  4. 3) WritingsAll other materials such as Psalms, Proverbs, Chronicles, Job, etc.TalmudThe Talmud is generally described as an interpretation of the Torah and a divinely revealed guide of morals and conduct. It is used to settle complicated problems concerning the obligations imposed on Jews by the Torah

  5. 1) Mishnah– a collection of oral laws handed down by word of mouth that was collected and edited by Rabbi Judah around 200 C.E.2) Gemara – a collection of commentaries on the Mishnah
