  5. Structure of the project • Scouting project 2002 >> positive advise • Joint long term vision 2020 - 2040 • Formulating transitions roadmaps by consortia • Selection of promising transition roadmaps • Selecting and funding of relevant experiments • Formulating of a policy roadmap for biomass

  8. Co-operation Industry / NGO’s / gov Based on good mix of interests: • prevention of climate change (NGO’s+GOV) • prevention of sustainability problems (NGO+IND) • economic possibilities (IND + GOV) • security of energy supply (GOV + IND) • agriculture interests

Co-operation Industry / NGO’s / gov • A project group with all parties represented • Start with a joint long term vision • Talk about the short term problems with the vision in mind • Combine the markets for biomass: agriculture, energy, transport, chemistry and bioproducts for new sparkling coalitions • Focus on opinion leaders: Shell, Essent, DSM, DOW, WWF, Foundation for Nature and Env

Examples of transition pathways • Ethanol for transport (lead by Nedalco) • Biomass use in coal fired power plants (KEMA) • Bioplastics (lead by potato waste processor) • Hydrothermal upgrading (lead by Biofuel BV) • The wooden society (lead by Arcadis) • Hydrogen from wet biomass (lead by ECN) • Bio refinery (lead by ATO)

  11. Biomass transition Today • Vision ready and approved (160 delegates) • 16 transition roadmaps are in the making • October: selection of transition roadmaps • October: joint paper sustainability of biomass • November: development of experiments • 2004: Selection and start of experiments

The Vision: Biomass 2040 • 30% of Dutch energy system Bio Based in 2040 • Bio-electricity, transport, chemistry and products competing in a EU level playing field • Biomass for ecological and economic reasons • Tight ecological restrictions: competition with food production, biodiversity loss and other emissions • Co-operation between Industry, NGO’s, Government and Science is required

Main conclusions Biomass transition • Co-operation industry, NGO’s and government crucial • When government hesitates; start with a common paper from pro-active industry and NGO’s • Respect each others interests and formulate a common vision • Work on long and short term issues • Connect an inner circle and inform everybody!
