A Tale of Two Solutions • We designed two different solutions for the task prompt: • one for private universities and one for public universities regarding the differences in our limitations • Our aim is to provide a realistic flexibility within different limitations so that the solution could be applicable

Rationale: Separate Class • Pros • You can customize the course • i.e. Having tutorial hours • More focused • Not repetitive • Classroom management could be easier • Promotes learner autonomy • Cons • Lower face-validity • Lower motivation • Less efficient for testing and curriculum • Space & Instructor constraints • Difficult to plan ahead

Rationale: Mixed Class • Pros • Peer-learning • More efficient and easier for testing and curriculum • Students having a role as an expert learner • No need for an extra classroom and teacher • Cons • No customized courses • Could be boring for the repeat students • Repeaters might be disruptive • Repeaters might affect the motivation of mainstream students negatively • Ts might not be able to cater for the individual needs of the repeaters • Repeaters might slow down the pace

Course Specifications for Separate Classes • Class type: Separate • 8 week class • No. of students: 15 max. • Contact hours: 25 hours • 15 in-class • 10 tutorials • Materials: Different coursebook and supplementary materials • Needs analysis questionnaire / meetings with students & teachers • Assessment: The same objectives should be tested • Vocabulary items could change based on the coursebooks • Learner autonomy: Sts should set goals & reflect on their performance throughout the course

Course Specifications for Mixed Classes • Class type: Mixed • 8 week class • No. of students: 30 max. • Contact hours: 20 - 25 in-class contact hours depending on the level (1-2 office hours) • Repeat sts could be supported during office hours • Materials: New coursebook and supplementary materials • Needs analysis questionnaire • Feedback given by both the sts and the Ts at the end • Learner autonomy: Sts should set goals & reflect on their performance throughout the course

  8. Assessment Tools • There should be various assessment tools to be used to assess both the progress and the overall achievement: • Formative + Summative Tests • Other components (such as speaking & writing tasks, learning management systems, class-participation grade) • Suggestions: We can have task groups at each level to customize the course and prepare some materials
