  1. The First Boer War C aim – to explain how this helped Britain to increase their influenceB aim – to explain how far this helped Britain to increase their influence • The British annexed the Transvaal in 1877. • How would this have led to war? • Why did the British annex it? • Initially the Boers resisted peacefully. In 1880 they resorted to violence.

  2. The War The fighting started in 1880. The British lost most battles from 1880 to 1881. The British lost the Battle of Majuba hill, which the British had hoped they would win and would make the Boers withdraw as it was an important strategic spot. Why did the British lose?

  3. What happened after the British lost? • The Boers and British signed the Pretoria convention. This meant that the Boers had control over matters within and concerning the Transvaal. The British had supervisory control of the foreign affairs of the Transvaal and internal legislation regarding black societies. In practical terms the British had no power. Three years later the London Convention removed these vague rights and the Boers had full control over the Transvaal.

  4. What caused the First Boer War? • What happened in the First Boer War? • Who won the First Boer War? • Who won the Zulu War? • How did Rhodes help Britain to increase their influence in South Africa?

  5. Plan an answer to this question in fours. Britain increased their influence in South Africa due to men on the spot. How far do you agree with this statement? Team write – assign one person to each part. Introduction, one side of the argument, second side of the argument, conclusion.

  6. Homework – due Tuesday 25th November • Finish your paragraphs/introductions/conclusions • Research the Jameson Raids and answer these questions in hand writing. • Why did the Jameson Raids happen? • What happened during the raids? • Who won the raids? • How did Rhodes affect British influence in the Jameson Raids? • Do you think further tension would follow?
