  2. Maslow & Needs • Need – a lack of something that is required • Certain needs have priority over other needs • Abraham Maslow developed a hierarchy of needs • Believed lower needs must be met before a person can strive to meet higher needs

  3. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

  4. Physical Needs (1) • Basic needs (food, water, clothing, shelter, oxygen)

  5. Safety (2) • The need to free from anxiety & fear • The need to feel secure in their environment • The need for routine • Threats = marital problems, job loss, disease, abuse

  6. Love & Affection (3) • The need to belong • The need to relate to others • The need for acceptance • Threats = isolation, bullying, social disorders, feelings of dependence, rejected, “damaged”, failure

  7. Esteem (Self Esteem) (4) • Esteem = Respect; high regard • Self esteem = Overall sense of self worth/personal value • The need of feeling important • The need of feeling worthwhile • Achievements • Social recognition • Threats = apathy, quitting, abuse, laziness

  8. Self Actualization (5) • Reaching a person’s full potential • Characteristics • Confident • Stick to their beliefs • Noncritical (of self/others) • Reach out to others • Supportive • Feel strongly about themselves (not prideful)
