The Rise of Concerts (1) • Public concerts a new phenomenon • Prompted by growing middle class & emphasis on “the pursuit of happiness” • Holywell Music Room, Oxford, England • First hall built specially for concerts, 1748 • Concerts proliferated throughout Europe in last half of the century • But composers still relied on church & court patronage and the opera house for their livelihoods

The Rise of Concerts (2) • Subscription series & benefit concerts especially popular • Concerts featured orchestral, chamber, & vocal music • Gave particular impetus to creation of new orchestral works • Purely orchestral music moved into the public arena for the first time • Haydn’s London Symphonies & many Mozart piano concertos written for public concerts
