  1. Natural Resource Information Systems

  2. Objectives • NRIS Water Overview • Spatial Data in NRIS Water • Integration of NHD data

  3. What is NRIS? • NRIS is . . . a suite of databases and computer application products containing spatial (map) and tabular (numbers) data collected and recorded in a consistent manner (protocols).

  4. Corporate Data What is NRIS? • NRIS is designed to: • support field-level users on National Forests • work with a common set of basic data and data standards • provide a common computing environment • deliver access to data used for natural resource decision making to employees, our partners, and the public

  5. NRIS in the Forest Service • NRIS is part of EcosystemsManagementCoordination • NRIS is made up of several modules, each supported by aseparate team

  6. NRIS at Work • Assessments • Planning • Analysis

  7. NRIS at Work • In the Future • Increased integration among NRIS modules • Improved public access to data • Greater interagencycoordination

  8. NRIS Water • Integrated application for supporting the work of field level hydrologists and fisheries biologists • Field collected data • Supports and encourages standardized protocols • Links tabular data to spatial data • Consistent data format for analysis tool development

  9. NRIS Water – AI • Aquatic Inventory • Channel characterization • Fish habitat • Multiple scales • Valley segments • Reaches • Channel units

  10. NRIS Water – AB • Aquatic biota • Aquatic animal occurrence • Fish • Invertebrates • Population estimates • Individual meristics • Lakes and streams

  11. NRIS Water – WIT • Watershed Improvement • Survey of potential sites • Project management • Planning • Budgeting • Implementation • Monitoring

  12. NRIS Water - WUTS • Watershed Uses Tracking System • Water uses • Municipal/rural • Recreation • Stock/wildlife • Water rights • Status/ownership • Adjudications

  13. Computing Environment • Development Platform • UNIX Wide Area Network / PC Desktop Clients • Primary Software • Oracle 7 (Unix) • ARC/Info 7.x (Unix) • Arcview 3.1 (Unix) • User Interface • Oracle Forms (PC Client) • Arcview (Unix) • MS Office (PC Client)

  14. Stream Stream Segment Spatial Data in NRIS Water • Map Features play a primary role • Data is collected on real world features which can be represented in GIS • Primary interface to drill down to data is through Spatial Navigation Watershed (HUC)

  15. Coverages in NRIS Water • Stream (Route LLID) • Waterbody (Polygon) • Watershed (Region HUC4,5,6) • Travel_Routes (Route Road) • WTR_Points (Point) • WI_Polygons (Polygon)

  16. Hydrologic Units (HUC) • The United States is divided into a hierarchy of successively smaller hydrologic units • Each hydrologic unit is identified by a unique hydrologic unit code

  17. Through Forms Hierarchical Tree Control Through ArcView PL/A and extensions HUC Navigation

  19. Spatial Tools - Arcview Project • Interaction of Oracle Forms and ArcView for data display and query

  20. Spatial Tools - Arcview Project • Event creation for linear and point events on streams and roads

  21. Water ArcView Extension Display and query of tabular data SDI Water Tools Arc/Edit interface for water coverages Maintains referential integrity between Info tables and associated Oracle tables Water ArcView Project Spatial Tools for Water V1.1

  24. Why NHD in NRIS Water? • Consistent Data Model with National Scope • Low resolution data available Nationally, high resolution in development • Vertically integrated data model (streams, waterbodies, points) • Cooperative management • Data Sharing • Application Tools

  25. NHD Spatial Model Existing Spatial Model V1.0 March 2000 V1.2 March 2001 V1.1 December 2000 Future Versions Development Cycle of NRIS Water

  26. NHD in NRIS Water - Issues • Stream Centric Users • New Spatial Data Model • High Resolution Data • Cooperative Data Management

  29. Issues – New Spatial Data Model • Solutions • Agency GIS Core Data Standards • Transition to new model • Tools • Training

  30. Issues – Cooperative Data Management • Solutions • Communication • Editing and Updating • Route Identifier • Value added features

  31. Issues – High Resolution Data • Solutions • Workload • Framework for Partnerships • Contracts

  32. Summary • NRIS Water Overview • Pretty neat stuff • Spatial Data in NRIS Water • Makes NRIS Water neat • Integration of NHD data • Challenges • Makes NRIS Water more than a Forest Service Application
