  1. Why are we here? • We want Jie Ming Academy to prosper • We want our kids to thrive • We want to build community within our parent group • We want to continue building rapport with our administrative team • We want to centralize our efforts to maximize efficiency • We want to raise funds for our program, both passively and actively • We would like a way to organize and solicit donations • We want to provide enrichment opportunities/materials

  2. How do we do it? • PTA • PTO • Independent charitable organization

  3. What is a PTA? • PTA stands for “Parent Teacher Association” • An advocacy group formed to promote education and family welfare • National leadership team as well state level leaders • MN PTA began in 1922 • Local units “roll up” under the state organization to gain 501c3 status automatically

  4. Why PTA? PTA PTO/Other No national/state agenda No umbrella organization No dues required 501c3 status must be applied for individually (one time fee of $750) Insurance is not required and is more expensive You’re on your own! • Advocacy group • Dues to national and state organization • 501c3 status is automatic • Insurance is available via preferred rate program • Templates, turn key resources, parliamentary procedure • Support from MN PTA!

  5. What are the constraints of PTA? • Every unit must submit at least 20 memberships ($6.25) • Every unit must have valid bylaws • Parliamentary procedure is used to conduct meetings • Not supposed to knowingly endanger 501c3 status • Anyone can speak during PTA meetings but only members may vote • Anyone can become a member • The unit is tied to a school • Focusing solely on fundraising is frowned upon • Generally speaking, monies should be spent in a timely fashion

  6. What passive fundraisers do we have? • Box Tops for Education account • Campbell’s Labels to Learn account • Target “Take Charge of Education” account • Lands’ End “Preferred School” program

  7. What active fundraisers do we have? • Chipotle event tomorrow in West St. Paul • Give to the Max through GiveMN and Razoo • China Sprout book fairs

  8. Executive Board composition: • Officers: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer • Committee Chairs • Chinese New Year • Public Relations/Fundraising • Principal • 3 at-large members from our school community
