  1. JISC MIRAGE 2011: Repository Enrichment from Archiving to Creation Dr. Xiaohhong (Sharon) Gao Middlesex University London NW4 4BT x.gao@mdx.ac.uk Repository @ http://image.mdx.ac.uk/vin/demo.php.

  2. JISC • Contents • Background • Project aims & objectives • Project plan • Summary

  3. JISC Background (1) • Built on MIRAGE – • Middlesex medical Image Repository with a CBIR ArchivinG Environment . • Strand : Start-up Repository • Between April 2009- Sept. 2010. • Accommodating: 100,000 2D images and 100 3D images

  4. JISC Background (2) – MIRAGE Phase1Web page

  5. JISC Background (3) – Repository -- connection

  6. Background (3) – Repository-- interface JISC

  7. Background (3) – Query JISC Query

  8. Background (3) – Retrieved results JISC

  9. JISC Background (3) – Limitations (1) 1. Viewing of 3D images in 2D way – brain images Computed Tomography Magnetic Resonance Positron Emission tomography (CT) (MR) (PET)

  10. JISC Background (3) – Limitations (1) 1. At Repository interface Montage

  11. JISC Background (3) – Limitations (2) 2. Uploading image

  12. JISC MRIAGE 2011 – Aims • MRIAGE Phase 1 – from Creation to Archiving (Done ) • MIRAGE 2011 – from Archiving to Creation • Aim • To enrich the current repository MIRAGE with two necessities to meet users’ needs, leading to a sustainable, usable and flexible model of data management.

  13. JISC MIRAGE 2011 –Objectives • Objectives • A review report on the feasibility of enrichment of MIRAGE. • Embedding Visualization Toolkit • Development of a plug-in for uploading queries • Evaluation report • Six-monthly interim reports

  14. JISC MIRAGE 2011 –Objective - 1 • Embedding Visualization Toolkit • At server side, visual content extraction will be performed and will be included into the existing feature database. • At clientside, 3D viewer built on VTKis expected to be incorporated to display 3D (or higher) images.

  15. JISC MIRAGE 2011 –Objective -1 • Embedding Visualization Toolkit – An Example

  16. JISC MIRAGE 2011 –Objective -2 • Development of a plug-in for uploading queries • Will integrate various types of textual metadata and ontology in addition to image data. C:\\myfile\brain.jpg Upload images Text search Brain tumour

  17. JISC MIRAGE 2011 – Project Plan • WP1: Literature review (2 months). • WP2: 3D Viewer embedding from server side (1 month). • WP3: 3D Viewer embedding from client side (2 months). • WP4: Enabling uploading facility (2 months) • WP5: System evaluation (1 month). • WP6: Dissemination. • WP7: Management

  18. JISC MIRAGE 2011 – Project Plan – WP1 • WP1: Literature review (2 months). • Thestate of the art web technologies (e.g., RDF metadata, SPARQl-to-SQL translation, OWL, DL, XML, Java3D). • Standardsand applications in relation to management of images with a focus on higherdimensional (>2D). • Interfacing with one of the existing open source software for visualization and analysis tools, such as ImageJ, 3D Slicer, MIPAV, ParaView and Amirais anticipated.

  19. JISC MIRAGE 2011 – Project Plan – WP2 • WP2: 3D Viewer embedding from server side (1 month). • Visualization Tool Kit (VTK) will be embedded into GIFT server side • On the other hand, GIFTprovides a PluginMakerdirectory including Accessorplug-in and Query processor plug-in that can be filled with in-house code to create an extended/modified query engine, which boils down to writing classes in C++ language.

  20. JISC MIRAGE 2011 – Project Plan – WP3 • WP3: 3D Viewer embedding from client side (2 months). • By providing JavaScript objects to communicate with remote web interfaces, allowing users to perform complex remote visualization processing in the server side while viewing the results locally. • Coding PHP client within GIFT framework.

  21. JISC MIRAGE 2011 – Project Plan – WP3 –by Amira

  22. JISC MIRAGE 2011 – Project Plan – WP4 • WP4: Enabling uploading facility (2 months) • Using the client-server communication protocol MRML. • Drawn from XML, MRML protocol with a formal editable specification DTD (document type definition) can be adopted by GIFT with a certain degree of extension.

  23. JISC MIRAGE 2011 – Project Plan – WP5 • WP4: System evaluation (1 month). • The statisticmethods • structured surveys • workshops • presentations.

  24. JISC MIRAGE 2011 – Project Plan – WP6 & WP7 • WP6: Dissemination. • Web site • Publications • Presentation. • WP7: Management • Will be the responsibility of EIS.

  25. JISC Summary • The role a successful repository plays serves two ways, which is from creation to archive and back. • It is anticipated that MIRAGE 2011 will enrich the repository to live up to its full potentials. • Repository @ http://image.mdx.ac.uk/vin/demo.php.
