How to protect a computer from viruses

How to Protect a Computer From Viruses

Cont…

  • 2Don't reuse disks that have been in other computers, don't download files from insecure sites, and don't open e-mail attachments unless you are expecting them. Be wary of messages and attachments, even from people you know, with vague subject lines and contents, such as 'Check this' or 'See these pics!!!'

Cont…

  • 3Obtain an antivirus program to more safely share disks, download files from the Internet and open e-mail attachments.

  • 4If your system gets a virus, visit your virus-scan software manufacturer's Web site and install any virus updates that are available. Then run the software. The software may not be able to delete the virus, but it may be able to identify it.

Cont…

  • 5Search the Web for information regarding your specific virus by typing the name of the virus or its associated file into a search engine, followed by the word 'virus.' For example, 'Melissa virus,' 'BubbleBoy virus,' and so on.

  • 6Download and install any software patches or other programs that will help you eliminate the virus. Or follow any instructions you find on deleting the virus manually.

Cont…

  • 7Run another virus scan to make sure the virus was dealt with properly.

  • 8Employ extra caution when you receive attachments that end in the commonly used extensions .doc, .exe, .com, .xls or .ppt. Never open attachments that end in .vbs or .js, since a typical user would never have a reason to open these files.

What kind of disks can i format

What Kind of Disks can I Format?

  • Disks capable of being formatted include hard disks and rewritable removable media (i.e. floppy disks, DVD-RW's, CD-RW's, etc.). In all these different types of disks, formatting performs the same action. Each disk has its own file system to format on. You should choose wisely which file system you will use.

What is a file system

What is a File System?

  • A file system is a way for the operating system to recognize the organization and indexing of files. Without a file system, your disk is just a mere collection of raw materials that spins and nothing more. A disk cannot hold files without a filing system. One example of a file system is CDFS, the file system for Compact Disks (CD's).

When should i format my disk

When Should I Format my Disk?

  • You should format your hard disk drive when you have experienced problems with the structure of the disk, or you want to start fresh. Keep in mind that formatting your disk means that you will lose all of the data on that disk.

How do i format my hard disk

How do I format my Hard Disk?

  • In Microsoft Windows, formatting your hard disk is sometimes as easy as right-clicking the disk on My Computer and clicking "Format." However, if you want to format your system disk, you will need a bootable CD-ROM or DVD that contains file system information and a program that will format your disk without needing to boot up your disk's operating system. Usually, operating system installation disks give you the option of formatting your disk before installing the operating system.

Cont..

  • How Long does it Take to Format my Disk?

  • This is dependent on the amount of data storage of your disk, and, most importantly, the amount of space you allocated on the partition you are formatting. In other words, a 200GB disk partition will format faster than a 1TB partition.

How to format a removable disk

How to Format a Removable Disk

  • Removable disks are very versatile because you can use them to transfer and save data files much quicker. You can also easily delete data when there is a need to clear some space. Removable disks include USB flash drives and various memory cards that are used in other portable devices.

cont..

  • Like ordinary hard disk drives, removable disks can get infected by viruses. This leads to the need to format the removable disk to ensure that the infection is removed. Formatting a removable disk may also be necessary to clear the entire space of the drive removing hidden files and fixing errors in the process.

How to restore a deleted file on a removable disk

How to Restore a Deleted File on a Removable Disk
