  1. Update from RA2Tau ττ Search (SUS-12-004) Andrés Delannoy1, Will Flanagan2, Alfredo Gurrola1, Will Johns1, TerukiKamon23, Jieun Kim3, Andrew Melo1, Roy Montalvo2,SinjiniSengupta2, Paul Sheldon1 (1) Vanderbilt University (2) Texas A&M University (3) Kyungpook National University

  2. Outline • Many updates to AN-11-519 and SUS-12-004 including • Systematics • mSUGRA scans • Simplified Model scans • Tau validation at large HT Fermilab Boselab

  3. Pre-approved!!!

  4. Control Regions for Data-Driven Approach

  5. Updated Systematic Uncertainties Now Before

  6. Updated Systematic Uncertainties • Luminosity and PDF uncertainties decreased • Increase in systematic uncertainties for background as will be discussed here

  7. General Approach to Control Regions Correction factor of events with two real τ’sto signal region Correction factor of events with one real τ and one fake τto signal region Correction factor of events with two fake τ’sto signal region Probability of more than(0,1,2) jets faking taus A couple examples of this equation in backup slides! Probability of Njets “N choose n” Jet fake rate

  8. Example: tt Control Region Probability of 1 or more jets faking taus • We assign systematics to compensate the variance of our parameters as a function of JEC, JES, τ ID efficiency, pT, jet fake rate, etc… Probability of 2 or more jets faking taus For example, here we study jet fake rate as a function of pT. The uncertainty in the constant fit gives us a systematic uncertainty.

  9. mSUGRA Scan • Finalized mSUGRA scan with official CMS style • These limits are for counting experiment only (we hope to include shape analysis in future) Now Before

  10. Simplified Model Scans • Need to finalize Simplified Model plots (T1lnu, T1taunu, T1tauh) with official CMS style • GMSB interpretation? Future Now (SUS-12-003) (T1Tauh)

  11. Tau Validation at large HT • We want to validate τ ID variables in a SUSY-like (large HT) environment • We will consider tt in 2012, but used W+jets in 2011 due to statistics • Similar event selection to signal region except • b-jet veto (to get rid of tt) • Only require one tau (>98% events have real τ’s from W decay) • Baseline selection includes two jets with pT > 100 GeV and MHT>250 GeV

  12. Tau Validation at large HT

  13. Tau Validation at large HT • Number of events in this control region scales with tau ID efficiency ≈

  14. Tau Validation at large HT • Here we consider τ scale factor as a function of HT and MHT • Uncertainty in constant fit assigned as systematic uncertainty

  15. Tau Validation at large HT • We bound our systematic uncertainty on τ ID with two other methods as well (see AN-11-519 and backup slides) • In all cases, our uncertainty is less than 7% • Tau validation with 2012 data is already underway (GulerKarapinar et al)! • Hope to consider tt events to simulate a more SUSY-like environment

  16. Conclusions • SUS-12-004 has been pre-approved • This talk was only a “clif-notes” of our MANY improvements since our last update • Many thanks to Rick and Henning (our 3G conveners) for all the guidance in the past couple months!!!

  17. Backup

  18. Njets≤1 • P(N>1)=0, P(0)+P(1)=1 Fake rate times rate of single jet events ✔ 100% chance that there are 0 or more jets faking taus

  19. Njets≤2 • P(N>2)=0, P(0)+P(1)+P(2)=1 100% chance that there are 0 or more jets faking taus

  20. Njets≤2 • With a dijet event, there is a f(1-f) probability that the leading jet fakes a tau and the second jet does not. There is a f(1-f) probability that the second jet fakes a tau and that the leading jet does not. There is an f2 probability that both jets fake a tau. The probability of one or more taus from two jets is 2f(1-f)+f2=2f-f2 Both jets must fake a tau to have two or more taus… f2

  21. Tau Validation at large HT ≈ (data-expected)/data = (219 -231)/219=5.5%

  22. Tau Validation at large HT • Over 98% real τ based on MC…

  23. Tau Validation at large HT • Also considered a weighted ratio for τ SF uncertainty… δSFτ<7%

  24. QCD Upper Limit
