3. MENSAJES CLAVE Estamos progresando contra la TB. En el 2005 el índice de nuevos casos de TB en todo el mundo se niveló por primera vez desde que la Organización Mundial de la Salud comenzó a recopilar datos sobre la enfermedad. Y desde el 2000 la tasa de detección de TB se ha duplicado. Todos pueden hacer algo para parar la TB, y todas las acciones individuales cuen­tan. En el 2008 celebraremos las acciones de personas que en todo el mundo están uniendo fuerzas para parar la TB. A pesar del progreso reciente, la TB continua siendo un masivo problema mun­dial de salud pública, con cerca de 9 millones de nuevos casos y más de un millón y medio de muertos cada año. Ahora se necesita un mayor compromiso de los gobiernos para luchar contra la TB en sus países. También se requiere un mayor compromiso de los donantes para financiar el cuidado y la investigación para nuevas medicinas, nuevos diagnósticos y nuevas vacunas contra la TB. Ahora se sabe con certeza que países fuertemente afectados por la TB pueden obtener una rentabilidad promedio de hasta 10 veces lo invertido en diagnós­ticos y tratamientos contra la TB con la condición de que implementen el Plan Global para Parar la TB de la Stop TB Partnership, que establece las pautas para confrontar la enfermedad durante los próximos 8 años. Para luchar contra la TB ya era suficiente el sufrimiento humano – ahora sabemos que responder a la enfermedad también puede parar la pobreza. Sin nuevos medicamentos, medios diagnósticos y vacunas más eficaces, nunca conseguiremos eliminar la tuberculosis. La prueba diagnóstica más empleada hoy día, la microscopía de esputo, tiene más de cien años y carece de sensibili­dad. Los actuales medicamentos antituberculosos tienen más de 40 años y se deben tomar por espacio de seis a nueve meses. La actual vacuna contra la tuberculosis, que tiene más de 85 años, confiere cierta protección contra las for­mas graves de la enfermedad en la niñez, pero es poco fiable como arma contra la tuberculosis pulmonar. Se necesitan urgentemente regímenes farmacológi­cos más sencillos y rápidos contra todas las formas de tuberculosis; medios diagnósticos rápidos y más precisos para detectar con prontitud la enfermedad, y una vacuna que prevenga con eficacia la tuberculosis a cualquier edad.

NEWS RELEASE Figo's new goal is fighting tuberculosis in his role as a Stop TB Ambassador The international football icon seeks to reach people around the world with messages about how to stop tuberculosis 24 January 2008 - Geneva/Milan -- The Stop TB Partnership* today announced the appointment of Luis Figo* as a Stop TB Ambassador. Figo, a football star beloved around the world, will capitalize on his fame and popularity to raise awareness about tuberculosis (TB) and the need to fight this disease, which takes the lives of 4400 people every day. "Tuberculosis is one of the unfairest fouls in the game of life," Figo said on the occasion of the announcement. "I am grateful to the Stop TB Partnership for giving me the opportunity to help protect the world's people against this terrible illness." TB is an airborne infectious disease that is preventable and curable. People ill with TB bacteria in their lungs can infect others when they cough. In 2005, 8.8 million people fell ill with TB and 1.6 million died. If TB disease is detected early and fully treated, people affected by the disease cease to be able to infect others and can be cured. On the occasion of Figo's appointment, the Stop TB Partnership launched a competition for the design of an educational comic book featuring Figo as the main character. The project's aim is to entertain children and young adults while educating them about TB. "We are grateful to Luis Figo for running with the ball on this initiative, which can save many lives if young people take the messages in the comic book to heart and share them with their elders" said Dr Marcos Espinal, Executive Secretary of the Stop TB Partnership. Submissions for the competition, which are due on 10 April 2008, are to consist of the design of a comic book, using a script provided by the Stop TB Partnership. The winner of the competition, which is open to anyone over the age of 18, will be awarded a US$ 5000 cash prize. The comic book will be published by the Stop TB Partnership for worldwide distribution and exhibited at the International Festival of Amadora, 24 October - 9 November 2008; and the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée 2009 (Angoulême). "The World Health Organization welcomes this announcement, as we are confident that Figo, with his strong belief in humanitarian causes, will inspire millions of people all over the world to call for action to stop TB," said Dr Mario Raviglione, Director of the World Health Organization Stop TB Department.
