  4. Terminology Arab- a member of an ethnic group originating on the Arabian Peninsula Arabic- language spoken by people of Arabic descent 1/5 of all Muslims are Arab Allah- Arabic for “God” Muslims believe they worship same God as Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and other prophets
  5. History Muhammad-born in Mecca around 570 A.D.
  6. History Worked as a shepherd, later an honorable, successful merchant Married woman named Khadija Was bothered by pagan worship in Mecca At age 40, believed he heard angel Gabriel speaking to him
  7. History Muhammad believed the angel was calling him to be the messenger of the one true God( in Arabic, Allah) Encouraged by Khadija, he began to spread his teachings Meccan leaders threatened him, so he fled to Medina (City of the Prophet)
  8. History This journey is called the Hijra. The year, 622, became the first year in the Muslim calendar. Winning enough converts in Medina, he returned to Mecca in 630.
  9. Kaaba Kaaba- Temple believed to have been built by Abraham to worship God Muhammad destroyed the idols being worshipped inside Rededicated Kaaba to Allah, became holiest site in Islam

  11. Beliefs Quran- Sacred text of Islam Believed to be direct word of God as spoken to Muhammad Was final word on all matters Muhammad is last and greatest of prophets, including Abraham, Moses, Jesus. Deals with daily life, criminal law, ect Emphasizes ethics, social justice
  12. Beliefs Only true Quran is in Arabic, since this is the direct word of Allah. All other versions are just translations of true Quran All Muslims learn Arabic

Beliefs Quran is believed to be final revelation of God’s word Hebrew, Christian Bibles are earlier form of revelations Sharia- Law developed from interpretations, examples of Muhammad Regulates many aspects of life Jihad- A duty of Muslims to struggle overcome immorality Can mean within themselves Can also mean a struggle in the world if needed

  17. 3. Zakah Alms-giving Must give money to help poor In Muslim countries, there is a tax for this purpose
  18. 4. Sawm Fasting during Ramadan During the holy month, Muslims do not eat or drink anything from sunrise to sunset NFL
  19. 5. Hajj Pilgrimage Once in their lifetimes, Muslims must make the trip to Mecca to pray at the Kaaba.
