  2. Unas vacaciones.... Lee las vacaciones del señor Terry y busca el significado de las palabras en azul. Presta atención al uso del pretérito y el imperfecto. Completed actions like ‘I travelled’, ‘I hired’ are used in the top paragraph as a list of actions in the preterite. At first Mr Terry is using the preterite as he is saying what he did (completed actions) El año pasado pasé dos semanas en Madrid en España. Viajé en avión y llegué a las dos de la tarde al aeropuerto. Alquilé un coche y hice una pequeñagirade la ciudad antes de ir a mi hotel. El hotel era buenísimo, había piscina, sauna y restaurante para los clientes. Mi habitación estaba en la segunda planta y tenía una vista muy impresionante del parque del buen retiro desde la ventana. El dueño era muy amable y me invitaba acenarcon su familia todas las noches. In the 2nd paragraph Mr Terry is giving a description of the hotel. This includes phrases like ‘It had’ &‘There were’ and uses the imperfect tense. So now we are describing the hotel, we are talking about something that was not temporary (a description in the past) so we use the imperfect tense.

  3. Click mouse to advance So Anam, remind me again when we use the imperfect tense Well Safuna, you can use it to say ‘what you used to do’, ‘what you were doing’ or in ‘descriptions’ and for ‘repeated actions’ in the past tense. Underneath are some examples. Cuando era joven siempre visitaba a mi abuela en Irlanda When i was young i always used to visit my grandma in Ireland Estaba en el jardín cuando apareció un hombre I was in the garden when a man appeared The food was just divine La comida era divina

  4. Click mouse to advance So remind me, how do we make the imperfect tense? Well it’s pretty easy really. Here are the different types of verb ending. There’s only 3 irregular verbs too! - ER VERBS(comer- to eat) -IR VERBS (subir-to go up) -AR VERBS (tomar-to take) I Comía Subía Tomaba YouComías Subias Tomabas He/She Comia Subía Tomaba We Comíamos Subiamos Tomábamos You(pl) Comíais Subíais Tomabais They Comian Subían Tomaban IRREGULARS = SER/IR/VER Ser = era/eras/era/éramos/erais/eran Ir = iba/ibas/iba/íbamos/ibais/iban Ver = Veía/veías/veía/veíamos/veíais/veían

  5. Click mouse for answers Una pequeñita prueba. Mete los verbos en el imperfecto para traducir las frases que te corresponde. Andaba Tomaban Comía Pensaba Ayudaba Lavabas Usaba Llamaba Corría Empujabas Estaba enfadada Saltábamos Salía Jugaba I used to walk (andar) They were taking (tomar) I was eating (comer) He used to think (pensar) I was helping (ayudar) You were washing (lavar) I was using (usar) She was calling (llamar) I used to run (correr) You were pushing (empujar) I was angry (estar) We were jumping (saltar) I was going out (salir) She used to play (jugar)

  6. Click mouse to advance Ok great so we know how to use and make the imperfect tense but is there any point to all this? Hurrah! Let’s get our suitcases and get to the airport. Nice to see you’re ready so quickly. I’ve emailed you the addresses of the hotels you’ll be staying at; you can use www.tripadvisor.es to find out about them. Remember you can find out lots of other information on this website like location, price and photos. Of course, i’m going to be sending you on holiday to Spain where you’ll each stay in a different city and a different hotel. Your job is to write a review on the hotel you stayed in; obviously you’ll be describing things so you’ll need to use the imperfect tense. Little do they know.... I spent the money Mr Jarvis gave me to pay for their hotels on a new duck pond for my mansion. They’ll all be staying in very cheap hotels hahahahahaha.

  7. TASK 1: Task 1 is a reading exercise. Each of you have been given a link to a review of the hotel you will be staying in. The website is called www.tripadvisor.es : a site for holidaymakers to give their opinions on. Translate the review back into English and write a summary of 5 lines on what you have found out about the hotel. Click on your character to begin your first task.
