JINA Reaction Rate Library & Database STEP1: rp-process Phase 1: reaclib based rp-process database Project carried out by dedicated JINA research associate: Alexander Sakharuk Database Contents: • reaction rates in fitted reaclib format including SEF • SEF • real data points to judge fit • multiple versions, one recommended • sources • community comments (discussion threads)

JINA Reaction Rate Library & Database STEP1: rp-process Activity path: • update reaclib using (done) • theoretical calculations with updated masses • existing compilations (NACRE, Iliadis et al. 2002) • individual work judged “uncontroversial” with some cutoff date • Publish and make first release publicly available (coming soon) • Create a continuous and transparent update path (in the works) • Prejudge new data and sort into categories:(currently done by Michael and Hendrik) • Not yet prejudged but found in literature • Difficult/controversial  to be evaluated later • Clear case: to be implemented into reaclib • Fitted and available, but not in new release • Continuously work on these categories as man power allows • Gather input from community (discussion threads etc) • Figure out next steps (together with community): • Develop guidelines, procedure and identify man power for evaluations(rely on independent community efforts such as NACRE) • Enhance database: other fit formats, error bars, ….. • Imbed into other “Meta” efforts: NNDC, nucastrodata.org, …

JINA Reaction Rate Library & Database STEP1: rp-process • Reaclib database will be available through WWW interface • Some Features: • Release of recommended libraries at certain times • Users can download these in reaclib format, or they can create own libraries and download those • Own libraries can be created using web interface or with “control files” that can be edited by the user and be uploaded • All libraries are documented in the database – public can lookup contents of any library for which name has been published • Continuous updates • Discussion threads for each rate

Jour. Nucl. Astr. JINA online journal for nuclear astrophysics data Future • Plus side: • individual initiatives – one important piece • there seem to be ways to establish the technical infrastructure needed • there might be ways to fund some personnel to process, and work on technical side of updates JINA position open ! Key problem: Updating and evaluating

JINA online journal for nuclear astrophysics data Future • Updating: CAN BE DONE BY FEW PEOPLE + COMMITTEE/EDITORIAL BOARD • search literature • categorize (expert group ?) and make results public contineously • At least one knows what is in the pipeline where • Easy things can be done (JINA person, or might motivate others) • List of hard things that can be dealt with for evaluation • Evaluating: HOW TO GET EXPERTS TO DO IT ? • make it easy (tools) • manual (standardize and facilitates) – can we develop this ? • but in the end people need to be motivated ! • “committee” could look at rates regularly and decide that updates are needed • “committee” could ask referees to do a specific rate Final question: credit for nuclear experimentalists ???

Conclusions/Suggestions • form a working group; focus on rates initially but look at other things • have a user representative • credit for evaluators: regular publication (discussing changes) and evaluators as authors plus individual papers • credit for experimentalists: provide reference lists, encourage astrophysicists to use these at least for important rates • going beyond rates. Needed: • JINA abundances • Beta decay rates: evaluation, database; include in current effort lots of new data coming • Fission: collect exp data in one place and make theoretical compilations available • EOS data needed to use and evaluate should be accessible through one web site; agree on one reference EOS • EC, neutrino data available through one website • masses: make AME/theory masses available on one site
