HaikuPoetry – Whatisit?? • A haiku uses just a few words to capture a moment and create a picture in the reader's mind. • It is like a tiny window into a scene much larger than itself. • Traditionally, haiku is written in three lines… • Line 1 – 5 syllables • Line 2 – 7 syllables • Line 3 – 5 syllables

  4. Characteristics of Haiku A focus on nature. A "seasonword" such as "snow" which tells the readerwhat time of yearitis. A division somewhere in the poem, whichfocuses first on one thing, than on another. The relationshipbetweenthesetwo parts issometimessurprising. Instead of saying how a scenemakeshim or herfeel, the poet shows the detailsthatcausedthatemotion. If the sight of an emptywintersky made the poetfeellonely, describingthatskycangive the same feeling to the reader.
