  1. Knowledge Exchange project on CRIS/OAR interoperability Workshop on CRIS, CERIF and Institutional Repositories, CNR 10 – 11. May 2010 Mikael K. Elbæk

  2. Introduction • Background – PURE, ORBIT, PURE - > Open Access • Knowledge Exchange – JISC (UK), DFG (DE), SURF (NL), DEFF (DK) • Institutional Repositories Workshop Strand Report February 2007 • Exchanging Research Information (Matthias Razum, Ed Simons, Wolfram Horstmann) • Research paper metadata (Neil Jacobs) • Project initiated in November 2008 to end June 2010

  3. The Goal • it will make metadata input more efficient • it will avoid or reduce duplicated inputs of the same metadata on different platforms • it will increase metadata quality, reliability and reusability • it will increase levels of services based on these metadata • it will reduce costs of metadata handling and exchange • In reality to ”Knowledge Exchange” - > ie to get wiser!!

  4. The task • Analyze metadata requirements of CRIS and OAR • Select group of formats in use at partners • Chart entities and granularities • Practical use-case approach like at Utrecht workshop • Identify similarities and differences • Define/propose exchange syntax • Handle differences in granularity • Define/propose common exchange vocabulary • For the identified key concepts/entities • Stipulate best practice recommendations • For formats/systems to fully exploit the exchange format

  5. The Work • The project has based its work on practical experiences from the four KE countries (The Netherlands, UK, Germany and Denmark) with systems/formats such as: • CERIF2008, • MODS/DIDL, • DRIVER_DC, • DDF-MXD, • EPrints, • METIS • PURE

  6. The Result • The aim has not been to create a new standard, but instead is based on existing standards and knowledge! • But often these standards or the knowledge has been missing!?! • However the result is going to be: • An Exchange format syntax • A Common exchange vocabulary • And best practices

  7. See you in Aalborg
