  2. Using Tens Frames The number is ______ • Show number • Place on tens frames 10 + ____= ____ Tens Ones

  3. Tens frames • Using ice trays to fill in with object • Make a tens frame out of table cloth and duct tape for students to stand inside of it. • Make tens frame out of popsicle sticks to allow students to put objects inside squares (counting bears, etc.)

  4. Have students add a problem such as 8 + 4 and ask how that can be written as a number sentence with 10. 8 + 4 = 10 + 2

  5. Give students tens frames with 0-19 and have them order them. Memory game have a number on 1 card and the tens frame representation on the other and you can write the words on cards so it allows students to see written, pictorial representation, and numeric representation Have students play war with 10s frame cards the one with the highest amount wins or extend this and whoever is closest to 10 wins. Then they take the cards and keep playing until 1 person does not have anymore cards.

  6. Great for small group time • http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?ID=218 • Grouping and grazing for 10 plus more.

  7. Websites • http://www.fuelthebrain.com/Interactives/app.php?ID=29 • Would be good for grades 1 or 2. If you just use 5s frames or 10s frames would work for K-2 just being able to recognize numbers on the fives and tens frames. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGa2cVluGnU • This would be fun after students have had a chance to explore and figure out. • http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?ID=75 • Illuminations has a good interactive 5s and 10s frames for K-2. • http://www.edplus.canterbury.ac.nz/literacy_numeracy/maths/numdocuments/dot_card_and_ten_frame_package2005.pdf • Some good ideas of using 5 frames and 10s frames. • https://www.teachingchannel.org/videos/kindergarten-counting-cardinality-lesson • Video demonstrating lesson using 10s frame and discussing common core.
