  1. Identity

  2. Lesson Objective • To understand the theme of identity in The Reluctant Fundamentalist • I will be able to explain the central message Hamid expresses through this theme

  3. Vocab NotebookIdentity

  4. What does it mean? • Identity is • Who you are • Who you think you are? • Who others think you are?

  5. Let’s start with the last one • How do the following people see Changez? • Erica – (p28) • Jim – (p10) • Wainwright – • The American – • Start with those pages and move forward…

  6. Factors • There are a number of factors that shape identity

  7. Place

  8. History – good!

  9. History - bad

  10. Culture

  11. Likes

  12. What is the problem Changez faces? • He isn’t in Pakistan. • He is polite to the American. Perhaps stereotypically so? (p1-2) • At Princeton he seems to ‘fit’ the Princeton mold. (p10) • In Greece, he plays on the stereotype of the “polite” Pakistani. (p28, 32)

  13. More problems? • In Manila he plays another role- that of an American. (p74) • After September 11 he realises this is not the case. (p82)

  14. When is the truth revealed? •  • Having repressed his true self, by playing up acceptable moments of his personality, he is unable to quell his subtle delight at the events of 9/11 • Note – he doesn’t hide this truth from the American. Why?

  15. Identity Crisis • This is a point that reveals the extent of his crisis. • He struggles to understand himself and his cultural identity as a Pakistani. • He is forced to confront who he really is

  16. Problems • Even as he becomes aware of how important his Pakistani heritage is, he still tries to perform the roles to which he is ill-suited. • Working at Underwood Samson • Pretending to be Chris • Trying to be more for Erica

  17. The narration • Changez is an unreliable narrator- prone to exaggeration. • How does he try to present himself? FIND A QUOTE • As intelligent? • As innocent? • As a victim?

  18. Question • Why is Changez’s identity “so fragile”?

  19. Summary • What is the message about identity in Hamin’s novel? • Identity is fluid and changes through life. • We are forced to evaluate who we are. • Culture contributes strongly to identity. • Explain each of these messages with reference to the novel.
