  1. Electronics Offshore Navigation Chapter 8 1

  2. Learning Objectives Understand benefits of AIS. Download and install VPP2. Install Capn, with charts. Use interactive pilot chart data. Plan & optimize offshore voyage with VPP2. Transfer WPTs from VPP2 to Capn. Use Capn to get in and out of harbor. Set alarms. 2

  3. Computer Requirements Windows XP or Vista. Super VGA. Hard Disk Storage – at least 2 GB. DVD reader. High-speed internet connection. Printer. 3

  4. Automatic Identification System (AIS) Electronic navigation tool Collision avoidance. Can identify vessel by MMSI, name, etc. Course, speed, type, destination, rate of turn, etc. AIS displays on Capn screen, if connected. Three version of AIS. Class A: required on commercial vessels. Receive only: available to recreational boaters. Class B – receive/transmit recently available to recreational boaters. 4

  5. AIS Automatic Identification System Class B Transceiver 5

  6. Advantages of AIS Greater range than radar on most boats. Not affected by rain or sea conditions. Can ‘see’ around corner or over bluff. Detects course changes sooner than radar. AIS targets do not merge. 6

  7. Overview Offshore Software Visual Passage Planner 2 – VPP2 Electronic pilot chart data Basic program familiarization Ocean route planning Route creation Vessel profile creation Area selection Route optimization for vessel characteristics, performance, and month of voyage Exporting optimized waypoints to Capn. 7

  8. Overview Offshore Software (con’t) Capn Basic program familiarization Chart selection for ocean planning Data file importation from VPP2 Data conversion to waypoints Route creation from these waypoints Route modification 8

  9. Visual Passage Planner 2 A computer-based voyage planning program Based on NOAA data used for pilot charts. Using your parameters, optimized course based on pilot chart data Set vessel profile Select month of travel Generates reports 9

  10. Downloading VPP2 www.usps.org/national/eddept/n09 Provides a link Takes you to Digital Wave’s site, to download VPP2. Will need: Class license number High-speed internet Once installed, 6-months free usage Including time for exam. 10
