  3. A few important points… • In October 1947 Stalin set up the Communist Information Bureau – or COMINFORM – to “coordinate the work of the Communist parties of Europe”. • Stalin regularly brought the leaders of the each Communist Party to see him… Why / how was this useful to Stalin?

  4. 1944 – conflict between Greek Communists and Monarchists 1945 Britain supervises “free” elections… but makes sure that Monarchists win… Greece 1946 – Civil War starts between Communists and Monarchists 1947 – Britain cant afford to help… ready to leave… but then Truman offers to pay for cost of British soldiers in Greece Greece stays capitalist… but Greek Government was very weak… By 1949 Greece is only non-Communist country in Eastern Europe

  5. $17bn aid programme to rebuild European economies WHY??? 1) stop countries “going Red” 2) create markets for US goods / exports US Congress (Parliament) was against plan until Communists seized power in Czechoslovakia in 1948… Stalin forbade Eastern European countries from applying for help through the plan…
