  31. Quantum A-Series: Technical Issues

  32. Minimum System S/W Requirements • Windows • IE6 SP2, Firefox • Java Runtime JRE 1.5.0 with Server v1.0.9 • Java 1.6 and later with Server v2.0.1 and later • WinXP default FTP client and Flash FXP FTP client • Mac OS X • Safari 2.0.1, Beta 3, Firefox • Java Runtime JRE 1.4.4 Update 2 or later (latest available) • MAC OS X default FTP client and Fetch, Cute FTP, Pro FTP client

  33. Server and Drive Software Installs • Update Server Firmware • Admin menu password: admin. • Select Update Server Firmware. • Click Choose File to download from the Quantum site. • Click Update and wait until complete. • Select Reboot and restart the drive.

  34. Server and Drive Software Installs • Update Drive Firmware • From the Admin menu, select Update Server Firmware. • Click Choose File to download from the Quantum site. • Click Update and wait until complete. • Select Reboot and restart the drive.

  35. Network Problems • Can’t get to the drive at default 10.10.10.10 • Make sure the host computer is in the 10.10.10.x range. • Can’t see the drive configured for the house network • Use standard network debugging procedures: ping, etc. • DHCP Issues • Must know how to get client IP table from DHCP server, OR • DHCP and DNS servers must be set to dynamically share the hostname as new IP addresses are assigned. • Not Getting GigE speeds • Must have GigE ports, routers, AND cables (all 8 wires). • Check physical Ethernet cables.

  36. Likely User Errors • Wrong Passwords • Repair entries through the Configuration tab. • Client login password can only be set through Admin Setup utility. • Admin login password can only be changed on the Change Admin page. • Attempting Too Many Logins • Drive is single root user = read / write privileges. • Login- root • Password - password • Up to 6 concurrent guests = directory contents viewing only. • Login- guest • Password - guest

  37. Likely Drive Problems • Invalid characters, or file name is too long • File names are limited to 100 characters, using standard alphanumerics, underscores, and periods. • Invalid characters include:   • \ (backslash) •  / (forward slash) • : (colon) • * (asterisk) • ? (question mark) • " (double quotes) • < (left angle bracket) •  > (right angle bracket) • | (pipe)

  38. Likely Media Problems • Bad media can cause: • Broken pipe error message • Clean drive alarm • Tape issues • Wrong media type • Media not inserted • Media write protected (write errors)

  39. Hidden Contextual Menu • Right click* in drive directory pane to access menu • Must select Acknowledge Error for many error conditions • Select Unlock system to eject magazine on SuperLoader • Access to MXF file properties and Partial restore dialog * Command-clickon Macs

  40. Diagnostic Tools - Logs • To capture server and drive logs: • On the Admin menu, select Diagnostic Log. • Click Generate New Log. • May need to enable Syslog Messages (save additional info) on theAdmin Menu > Setup page and re-create the problem. • Enabling will drive impact performance. • Remember to disable after debugging.

  41. Diagnostic Tools - Logs • Click Generate New Log. The A-Server Syslog and the tape drive’s internal log will be zipped and TAR’ed into a file.

  42. Diagnostic Tools - Logs • Save this file to the local hard drive. • This file can be sent to Quantum Engineering for interpretation.

  43. Diagnostic Tools - Logs • How to FTP capture client logs • Select the Configuration Tab, then turn on Use log file. • Click Change log file and choose a convenient location. • Enabling will drive impact performance. • Remember to disable after debugging.

  44. Diagnostic Tools - Reset • How to RESET a drive: • Disconnect Ethernet. • Power down the drive. • Insert a write-protected cartridge (red showing). • Power up the drive. The cartridge will eject after ~45 seconds. • Repeat 3 times. • Cycle Power - you are now reset to IP 10.10.10.10, and all other values are reset to their defaults

  45. Apple File Issues - Every File Is 2 Files • Files on Macs contain Data AND Resource forks • Most FTP clients do not deal with this (they lose the resource fork during a transfer). • “Fetch” shareware does “AppleSingle” transfer (slower). • Our clients v1.0.9 and earlier lose theresource fork. • Our client v2.0.1 does “AppleDouble” for most, but not all, files - v2.5.0 will address all issues. Filename AppleDouble (v2) ._Filename Filename (Data) Filename (Data) Restore Must usesame client Resource Resource Archive Filename (Data plus Resource) AppleSingle (Fetch) On Mac file system On Mac file system On A-Series file system
