  1. Any textbooks in lockers? • Hand back Social Comparison articles from last Thursday (Contender Syndrome)

  2. Minds On – Group Theory Terms Review • What are 4 characteristics/elements for a group? • According to Festinger, why do we constantly compare ourselves to others? • Pretend you play guitar, and you go to a concert where the guitar player is amazing. This inspires you to practice more. What term applies? • Pretend you play guitar, and you are terrible. The only problem is, you don’t realize you suck and love playing as loud as you can because you think everyone wants to hear you. What term applies?

  3. Deviance Terms Review • What is deviance? • What are the 5 categories on Merton’s typology? • Conformist • Ritualist • Retreatist • Innovator • Rebel • Which ones have the approved goals and means? • With a partner/small group group make a list of people/professions/celebrities that would fit into that category on Merton’s typology

  4. Steve Jobs – Deviant or Innovator? • After watching his 2005 Commencement address read the “In Focus” on pg. 78 and do the questions

  5. Deviance and Social Control

  6. To sociologists, one doesn’t have to act in a deviant manner to be considered deviant • If one’s appearance, physical ability or a particular trait distinguishes them this can qualify them

  7. Sociologists use the term stigma to describe labels society uses to devalue members of certain groups • Examples: • Nerds (smart kids) • Goths (dress in gothic style) • Jocks (athletic types) • Hipsters (trendy people who wish they were from Brooklyn)

  8. Social Control can apply to deviance in that we constantly try to manage behavior in society based on perceived norms Informal Sanctions • Rewards/punishments that can be applied by most members of a group • Examples: mocking, thanking for help, gossip, facial expressions Formal Sanctions • Rewards/punishments that can be imposed by people with special authority • Judges/police/teachers are among those with this “power” • What other terms/theories can both sanctions apply to?

  9. PBS Deviance Documentary (2003) As you watch keep a few things in mind: • Do they acknowledge the idea of ‘positive deviance’? • How do they address the ideas of informal/formal sanctions? • How might the age of this video be a factor? • Do this video work to promote or dispel the stigma around crime and criminals?

  10. Textbooks! – Theories of Deviance • Use pg. 190-192 to fill in the chart on the Theoretical Explanations of Deviance

  11. Functionalist Perspective Main Theorists – Emile Durkheim Explanation – Deviance is common in society with both negative and positive consequences for social stability Why? – Deviance results in punishment, which is needed for society to function. Deviance can also define acceptable behaviour.

  12. Strain Theory Main Theorist – Robert Merton Explanation – Society doesn’t always allow for people to achieve their goals so deviance occurs Why? – More likely when a gap between cultural goals and the culturally approved means of achieving goals exists

  13. Control Theory Main Theorist – Travis Hirschi Explanation – We are controlled by social bonds based on Attachment, Commitment, Involvement and Belief Why? – We conform to social norms based on strong relationships in society. If these bonds don’t exist, deviance might result.

  14. Differential Association Theory Main Theorist – Edwin Sutherland Explanation – We deviate from social norms when we associate with people that favour deviance over conformity Why? – We learn techniques, motives, etc from the people we surround ourselves with

  15. Labelling Theory Main Theorist – Howard Becker, Edwin Lemert Explanation – Seeks to explain why we label certain people as deviant or otherwise in society Why? – Fear of the unknown results in labelling, and when we are successful at labelling others deviant it means we are not.

  16. Conflict Perspective Main Theorist – Connected to Marx (of course) Explanation – Society protects those in power Why? – The activities of poor or lower income people are defined by those with money and power

  17. Applying Theory • Make a chart like the one below and apply the theories we just discussed to the film we started class with. Are the examples to explain/discuss each?
