  1. Integrating Digital Libraries and Traditional Libraries:Two Catalogers’ Experiences • Annie Wu • Susannah Benedetti • University of North Carolina at Wilmington OLAC 2004 Montreal

  2. iLumina Digital Libraryhttp://dl.uncw.edu OLAC 2004 Montreal

  3. iLumina Digital Library • One of 356 collections of the National Science Digital Library (NSDL) • Funded by the National Science Foundation Digital Library Initiative Phase II (NSF DLI-II) • Features 1600 undergraduate teaching resources in science and mathematics • Created with IMS-compliant metadata OLAC 2004 Montreal

  4. Project History • Original iLumina project (2000-2003) funded to develop database & interfaces for searching and contributing resources • Current iLumina project (2003-2005) funded to create a model for sustainability through integration with traditional library systems OLAC 2004 Montreal

  5. iLumina Goals • Create a widely applicable model for sustaining NSDL collections beyond the period of their grant funding • Develop a method for enhancing access to the digital resources contained in the collections OLAC 2004 Montreal

  6. Catalogers’ Role • Analyzed and studied record fields in iLumina Digital Library • Created sample MARC records for two records from iLumina • Used sample records as model in creating crosswalks for harvesting metadata OLAC 2004 Montreal

  7. Cataloging Challenges • iLumina record fields vs. MARC fields --Fields not in local system load table --Fields not indexed in local library system --Lack of label for 5xx fields in MARC • Limiting searches to iLumina -- Location scoping -- Advanced keyword search • Determining publisher, distributor OLAC 2004 Montreal

  8. Metadata Scheme Crosswalks • Two tracks for iLumina data: --Ending at NSDL --Going into local library and ending at WorldCat • Three initial crosswalks considered before availability of Innovative XML Harvester • Two final crosswalks created and used after understanding the functionality of the XML Harvester OLAC 2004 Montreal

  9. Crosswalks Continued • Experimental crosswalks: IMS-DC-MARC IMS-MARC-DC IMS-MARC • Final crosswalks: IMS-NSDL_DC (Qualified DC) IMS-MARC XML OLAC 2004 Montreal

  10. Innovative XML Harvester • Converts XML data to MARC and provides mechanism for loading records --DC (Unqualified) to MARC --MARC XML to MARC --Other XML schemes to MARC • Processes XML data through OAI provider OLAC 2004 Montreal

  11. Harvesting • Harvest1: Metadata converter converts iLumina records into NSDL_DC and MARC XML. OAI provider processes both data formats. • Harvest 2: NSDL harvests NSDL_DC metadata through OAI provider • Harvest 3: Library harvests MARC XML metadata through OAI provider, processes it through load table and loads it into library database OLAC 2004 Montreal

  12. Metadata Harvesting OLAC 2004 Montreal

  13. Metadata: IMS to MARC OLAC 2004 Montreal

  14. Harvesting to Library • Customize local library system load table --270 field • Review local library system index table --024 indexed in ISN (I) --516 indexed in keyword notes (w) OLAC 2004 Montreal

  15. Clean up and Enhancement • Catalog librarians enhance harvested iLumina records in local library database • Authority work --LC Subject Headings --Name authority • Bibliographic quality control --Punctuation --Name order --Abbreviations --Capitalization --Constant data --Fixed fields OLAC 2004 Montreal

  16. Sending Records to WorldCat • Import enhanced iLumina records from local library system into CatME • Batch upload iLumina records file to OCLC WorldCat OLAC 2004 Montreal

  17. iLumina’s Future • Integration of submission, review, & cataloging processes within library • Determination of usage trends by monitoring library holdings added to iLumina records in WorldCat • Implementation of plans to increase size of the collection • Creation of model for sustainability through documentation of the integration process OLAC 2004 Montreal

  18. Teamwork & Cultural Differences • Team of scientists and librarians • Scientists unfamiliar with bibliographic standards and conventions • Librarians unfamiliar with NSF/NSDL environment • Ambiguous meanings of terminology: “library,” “cataloging,” “metadata” • Librarians learning new XML/OAI applications OLAC 2004 Montreal

  19. Implications • Sustainability is an important challenge for digital collections • Integrating digital collections into an established university library catalog is a feasible model • Non-librarians will be increasingly involved in creating digital collections • Catalog librarians can provide expertise in bibliographic standards and conventions OLAC 2004 Montreal
