  1. HELPING THOSE WHO FEAR Love and fear Love looks for opportunities to give. Fear keeps a wary eye on the possible consequences and asks: “What will he do to me?”

  2. The enemy of fear is love; the way to put off fear, then, is to put on love. Love is self-giving; fear is self-protecting. Love moves toward others; fear shrinks away from them. The more fear, the less love.

  3. Fear and punishment Fear “involves punishment” (1 Jn. 4:17, 18). Love removes the stinger from death (1 Cor. 15:55-57). Eliminating fear by love Biblical counselors must determine the source of fear and meet it by a proper call to repentance and love.

  4. Is the fear basically a fear of God or of man? Fear will vanish only when the counselee has learned to live the life of loving concern for his neighbor. FEAR OF CONSEQUENCES “The wicked flee when no man is pursuing” (Prov. 28:1).

  5. A guilty conscience can cause great emotional distress, and even bizarre behavior. Fears should not quickly be labeled unrealistic (e.g., “God is going to kill me.”)

  6. PHOBIAS A catch-all term that describes a group of fears that can be traced to many cause-and-effect situations with quite distinct etiologies. There are people who use fear manipulatively.

  7. Some “phobias” can be caused by faulty associative links (e.g., fearful of crossing bridges…caused by significant sleep loss). Fear of the previous experience. TENSION AND FEAR (STAGE FRIGHT) TENSION: A MATTER OF DEGREE

  8. DISTINGUISHING OBJECTS OF FEAR Does fear stem from a truly fearful object that it is biblically legitimate to fear (e.g., a copper-head snake), or was it generated from within in the presence of an object that it is not biblically legitimate to fear (e.g., a congregation feared by a preacher…unprepared to preach?)

  9. FIGHTING FEAR FIGHTING FEAR NECESSITATES AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE CAUSE(S) OF FEAR. FIGHTING FEAR NECESSITATES SEEING FEAR AS A FRIEND AND A FOE.

  10. FIGHTING FEAR NECESSITATES UNDERSTANDING THE CONSEQUENCES OF FEAR. FIGHTING FEAR IS MADE POSSIBLE WHEN THE BONDAGE OF FEAR IS BROKEN THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST.

  11. FIGHTING FEAR REQUIRES AN AWARENESS OF THE PATTERNS OF SIN AND TEMPTATIONS WHERE FEAR IS INVOLVED. FIGHTING FEAR INVOLVES KNOWING HOW TO REPLACE FEAR WITH LOVE.

  12. FIGHTING FEAR MUST BE FACED WITH THE PROMISES OF GOD. Jesus has promised to never leave us or forsake us (Matt. 28:20; Matt. 14:27) Jesus understands our fears and all the feelings that go with them.

  13. Our focus should not be on the fear /circumstances but on the Lord and His promises This means that obedience is more important than the circumstances. God ordains and rules over all our fearful circumstances.

  14. A plan for dealing with fear – Psalm 34 We must think biblically about our fears. Praise to God for His care in any and every situation in life. Rejoice and give thanks in any and every situation. Focus your thoughts on glorifying and pleasing God.

  15. We must speak biblically about our fears. Confess to the Lord your sins of fear and worry. We must act biblically in dealing with our fears.
