The Odyssey. By Homer. Homer’s Iliad. The setting for the Iliad is about 1,200 BC. The war was between Troy and Sparta (Greece.) It was started when the Trojans kidnapped Helen, a beautiful Greek Queen. It came to an end when Odysseus used a Trojan Horse to sneak the Greeks inside the city.

  2. Homer’s Iliad • The setting for the Iliad is about 1,200 BC. • The war was between Troy and Sparta (Greece.) • It was started when the Trojans kidnapped Helen, a beautiful Greek Queen. • It came to an end when Odysseus used a Trojan Horse to sneak the Greeks inside the city.

  3. Homer’s Odyssey • The Odyssey is a sequel to the Iliad. • Written by Homer in the 8th Century, BC. • It is about Odysseus and his return home after the Trojan War. • It takes place right after the end of the Trojan War. • What should have taken two weeks lasts for ten years.

  4. Homer’s Odyssey • The Odyssey is considered an epic. An epic has the following characteristics: • A physically impressive hero • A vast setting • A quest or journey • Supernatural forces • A basis in a specific culture or society • Characters struggle against fate • They are often sung

  5. Homer’s Odyssey An epic hero is one who • We share with him a sense of being somehow lost in a world of difficult choices. • We have to cope with unfair authority figures • We always have to work very hard to get what we want.

  10. Homer’s Odyssey • The story is about going home to Ithaca. • This journey should have taken only a few weeks. • It took ten years because of obstacles like: • A Cyclops • Poseidon • Some natives • Beautiful sirens • A trip to Hades • Sea Monster
