  1. Ali Yaakub JasmiMBChB, FRCSEdin. MS Gen Surg, (UKM) AY Jasmi is currently a Senior Consultant Surgeon and Professor of Surgery at the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He obtained his FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1990 and MS General Surgery from UKM in 1991. Following that he spent 2 years at the Leeds Institute of Minimally Invasive Therapy (LIMIT) in Leeds, United Kingdom from 1993 – 1994. Back in Malaysia he was responsible for establishing the Minimally Invasive Surgery Unit in the hospital and is currently heading the unit. He is active in propagating minimally invasive surgery throughout Malaysia. He holds many local and international posts including being the Governor for Malaysia in the Society of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA), executive member of the Association of the University Surgeons of Asia, founder member and executive member of the Asia Pacific Endosurgery Task Force (AETF) for Advanced Endosurgical Training (2004), founder member and executive member of the Asia Pacific Hernia Society (2004)and executive member of the Asia Pacific Bariatric Surgery Group (2004). He was past president of ELSA from September 2003 – 2005. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of The Asian Journal of Surgery. He performed the first laparoscopic transabdominal adrenalectomy in Malaysia in 1996 and till date has more than 110 cases in his personal series. He also peformed the first endoscopic thyroidectomy in Malaysia in April 2000. He pioneered many advanced laparoscopic upper GI procedures including laparoscopic Heller’s cardiomyotomy, thoracoscopic and laparoscopic oesophagectomies, laparoscopic gastric procedures, laparoscopic splenectomy etc. He was the first in Malaysia to venture into laparoscopic bariatric procedures in the treatment of the morbidly obese and established UKM as the centre of minimally invasive surgery for morbid obesity. He is a regular invited speaker in many meetings and conferences both locally and internationally. He regularly contributes as a teaching faculty in many workshops organized in Malaysia as well as abroad. He was the organizing chairman of major international events in Malaysia including the Pre-congress ELSA workshop on Minimally Invasive Gastrointestinal and Endocrine Surgery 2003,6th Asia Pacific Congress of Endoscopic Surgery 2003, International Live Surgery Workshop on Minimal Access Colorectal Surgery 2004, International Live Surgery Workshop on Minimal Access Hernia Surgery 2004, 1st Asia Pacific Hernia Society Congress 2005, 17th Annual Meeting of the Asia Pacific Endocrine Conference 2006 and 2nd Asia-Pacific Obesity Conclave – Malaysian Association for the Study of Obesity (APOC-MASO) 2007.
