The REEEP is a coalition of progressive governments, business, finance and other organisations including representatives of civil society that are committed to working together to deliver policy, regulatory and financing frameworks that will accelerate the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency systems - to drive down their costs and make these affordable energy options for all

REES meet challenge of sustainable dev: Reduce environmental impact of energy use - local and in-door air pollution, climate change and deforestation Social development - access to energy services and rural development, income generation Economic growth - energy security, resource productivity, commercial opportunity Clear opportunities & benefits - yet barriers exist

Cross-cutting themes • Need to build human & institutional capacity • Develop REEEP’s brand-name associated • expertise, stakeholder engagement & political support • Share information on success & failures • Forge common approach – all stakeholders • Build & strengthen networks & initiatives • Demonstrate REES work & can be profitable

REEEP in Southern Africa • REEEP is funding: • Southern Africa Financiers Network meeting • Southern Africa Tradable Renewable Certificates initiative & policy network • Darling Visitor Centre – as leader of community involvement • To Fund a Regional Node of the REEEP International Secretariat

REEEP can Promote Sustainable Energy Cities Initiatives Globally • Raise profile of ICLEI & Cities Initiatives • Attract new resources for networks & activities • Share & build understanding of Cities Strategies • Support & promote leading Cities & best practise • Raise City-issues in context of international debates on energy sector reform – electricity and transport • Showcase at Renewables 2004 – June, Bonn

Ideas for a REEEP Sustainable Energy Cities Initiative • Identify leaders of a REEEP Cities Initiative – REEEP Twinning between Cape Town and Leicester? • Work with ICLEI to build on initiatives of major cities - London, Chicago, Beijing, Sydney, Delhi, Sao Paulo? • Cities Renewable Energy Targets – for example Beijing 20% for 2008 Olympics • Public sector as procurer of sustainable energy • Buildings standards & regulations of buildings
