  2. Edward VII • The eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert • Was heir apparent to the throne for longer than any of his predecessors • Victoria had a poor opinion of him • Was part of a fashionable elite • Also known as the „Peacemaker“

The Edwardian period (1901-1910) • Sometimes extended up to 1912,1918 or 1919. • Corresponds to the French Belle Époque period • Art Nouveau had a particularly strong influence • Some writers of this period: Galsworthy, Shaw • The church’s role diminished • Many technological advances • British class system was very rigid; many people were poor and lived in miserable conditions. • Women fought for suffrage

  4. George V and World War I • Became king in 1910 after his father, Edward VII died • Changed his family name to Windsor • Proved to be a capable leader during the war • New troubles in Ireland during his reign – The „Irish Problem“

  5. House of Windsor • Was founded in 1917 when George V changed his family name Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to Windsor • There have been four Windsor rulers: George V, Edward VIII, George VI and Elizabeth II who is Head of State of the United Kingdom and 15 other Commonwealth realms
