  1. Social Media at Dick Smith Library Jennifer Barrera Tracy Holtman

  2. Don’t reinvent the wheel.

  3. General Tips for Social Media • Have a Logo and use it EVERYWHERE! Brand yourselves • Be nice. Respond/Reply/ReTweet – takes a friend to be a friend theory • Don’t be boring – mix it up. Posts, pictures, polls, videos, etc. • Can’t do it alone Make it a Team Effort!

  4. Use a redirect email address Not a personal account. Email can be moved to another individual without have to update social media accounts. Standardize your registration information.

  5. New and shiny is appealing, BUT: • ROI – Make sure there is a return on your time • You must think about support. • It is a time investment – time for current - able to do more? • Don’t start something and then drop it. • We have a Tech Task Force team that blog, tweet, and post to Facebook for the library.

  6. Tech Task Force Started in 2006-07 – Our CHARGE is to: • Research the integration of existing or new software and/or hardware technologies and implement as warranted; • Keep staff informed of new technologies/trends and their impact on libraries; • Monitor usage and effectiveness of new technology projects

  7. BLOG’s We actually have two: An internal one for our Staff, and one for the public the LOL

  8. Blog- The Library Online Lounge http://tarletonlibrary.blogspot.com/

  9. BLOG - • started it in 2007 – first one of campus • Marketing – events, new resources, introduced staff members • Top Ten Tuesday – most circulated items, best videos, 10 reasons…etc • Tarleton Thursday - posts about the history of Tarleton, the library, etc

  10. Feed other Social Media to the Blog

  11. Statics - Site Meter, but may be moving to Google Analytics

  12. FaceBook Everywhere in the library

  13. Facebook – no embarrassing childhood photos

  14. FaceBook

  15. Tips for Facebook • Two types of “pages” – create a business page. • Lets many people be administrators • gives you insights (statistics) • Viewer/readers like pictures of people not building • Must have CONTENT – at first we did not have a lot posts so no reason to follow us. • We use an app “Social RSS” to pull information from our blog…kind of slow…but it works

  16. Facebook posts

  17. Lots of new “Tarleton” pages

  18. Facebook issues – what we need to do better…? • Be selective. Don’t cross post everything. • Make it more interesting. • Ask ?’s – more interactive • While 80% of the library staff have Facebook accounts only three people has signed up to post for the library.

  19. Insights – Admins see

  20. Insight also emails every week

  21. Twitter Just starting to fly

  22. Twitter

  23. Our Twitter is growing • Just now starting to see students following us. • We are collaborating with other campus entity and twittering about DSL events • Interesting/relevant tweets = re-tweets

  24. From Techsoup.org – 10 Social Media Tips and Secrets – July 8, 2010

  26. How Cool is Twitter!

  27. RSS feed News and Events Section of the Library’s front web page

  28. News and events Feed I really put this in so I could ask you guys a question – is there a way to see how many people have subscribes to an RSS feed? Update section about every three days. Hard for me to test this because I make the changes so it never comes through my rss reader. RSS feed is created by our CMS

  29. Brand Monitoring Media Funnel Google Alerts

  30. Media Funnel – Who said what? Enables multiple staff members to tweet and post to facebook on the same account, without sharing a username and password Lets us schedule Tweets “Brand Montoring” – sends email when ‘Tarleton Library’ or ‘Dick Smith Library’ is put on the web . Monitors all social media (anything on the web) Free – but may not be for long.

  31. Google Alerts

  32. Social Media – Other Foursquare QR codes

  33. …sort of doing

  34. Foursquare

  35. Foursquare - Claim the venue • Edit Venue: edit your venue name, change twitter information, update your address, etc. • Manage Specials: submit, edit and activate or deactivate specials • Venue Stats: view analytics on foursquare usage at your venue. • Stats • Top Visitors • # of unique visitors • Gender • Time breakdown • Most recent Check ins • How they are sharing their information - % to Facebook, % to Twitter

  36. Foursquare • Game like appeal – earn badges. • More Tarleton locations everyday. • Use is growing very fast. • 12 different Tarleton building/campus locations on foursquare.

  37. Foursquare – next steps • Need to post signs • Encourage patrons to check-out instead of check-in • Encourage them to give feedback! Send comments to their friends, Facebook, and Twitter • Need to setup a “special” for customers - i.e. mayor get item, or after 5 check in you get a usb drive, etc.
