Semi-colon Rules • Rule 1: Use a semi-colon between independent clauses not joined by conjunctions like for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so (FANBOYS) • Garth Brook’s latest CD is selling rapidly ; he has become a major star. • Rule 2: Use a semi-colon between independent clauses joined by a conjunctive adverb or transitional expression such as therefore, furthermore, however, for example, etc. • I’ve called him repeatedly ; however, I’ve not been able to reach him.

  3. Practice • 1. Call me tomorrow I will give you my answer then. • 2. You will want to bring backpacking items for example, bring sleeping bags and pans. • 3. I have paid my dues therefore, I expect all the privileges listed in the contract. • 4. Some people write with a word processor others write with a pen.

Semi-colon Rules • Rule 3: Use a semi-colon to separate independent clauses that already contain commas. • Bert, Jose’, and Jette will sing, and my sister Pat will lead the band. • Rule 4: Use a semi-colon between items in a series that already contain commas. • The club officers are Kiyo, president, Lois, secretary, and Jane, treasurer.
