  2. Its not that NEW Just NEW to us Decades of successful use in other states gives credence to claims that Asphalt Rubber can dramatically enhance performance. More recent research work utilizing advanced testing techniques has verified its potential. Similar to our experience with SMA the increased cost is justified by the benefits of improved performance.

  3. Its newer to MASS DOT than some states but in recent years they’ve placed about 500,000 tons

  4. 9.5 mm E 10<30 12.5 mm E ARGG

  5. Does the ARGG compare to existing material?

  6. ARGG Limits similar to SMA fines are replaced with rubber

  7. 12.5 mm E ARGG 9.5 mm E 10<30 12.5 SMA

  8. 9.5 mm E 10<30 12.5 mm E ARGG 12.5 SMA

  9. Why would anybody in their right mind blend it themselves NO ONE WOULD

  10. Size MattersLeft (long graded) Right (80X20)

  11. Rubber Gradation for SR 15 100% passing the #20 6% passing #60 1% passing #200

  12. Performance Verification • Current Superpave specs require the DSR for high temp PG grading • Some crumb rubber modified binders have residual particles that may influence DSR measurements • the DSR can be used with some modifications but there are some more advanced tests which are being utilized in an effort to better assess the potential for performance evaluation of ANY mix including AR.

  13. Because of the high film thickness and the fact that the mastic is comprised of asphalt and rubber • Sampling Technique is Critical

  14. The material that sticks to the sampling tools and containers can critically affect test results. • CORES may be an alternative. 9.5 mm ARGG 18% 9.5 mm wearing 9% 9.5 mm SMA 11%

  15. Daily Belt Cuts compared to Daily Ignition Tests

  16. Acceptance Tests compared to Core Burns

  17. Any problems, complications???

  18. Artificial COOLING Is this artificial cooling? OR

  19. Temporary Line Testing

  20. Where do we go from here?

  21. The importance of preparation

  22. Adequate Drainage is Critical
