  1. Paideia Seminar Unit 5 Singled Out What does it mean to be “singled out”?

Paideia Seminar: Rules and Scoring • Each student will be given three tokens and will be expected to use them during the seminar. • You can use your token by raising your hand to speak. • After you speak, get up and place your token in the basket. • You can only speak three times during the seminar. • You can disagree with a classmate’s opinion but must do so respectfully. • There will be four statements for discussion.

  3. Points are given as follows: 2 points: agreeing or disagreeing with the statement and explaining why. 2 points: adding details to classmate’s comment. 2 points: raising a question that is pertinent to the statement read by the moderator 2 points: answering a classmate’s posed question 4 points: giving specific examples from real life that relate to the statement.

  4. Statement # 1 • People alienate themselves • by their own actions.

  5. Statement # 2 Throughout history, groups have been singled out for doing wrong.

  6. Statement # 3 Language is often used to single out individuals or groups.

  7. Statement # 4 Being singled out in society can take many forms.

  8. Statement #5 People throughout time have been singled out for various reasons.

  9. Statement #6 We have learned from history and we no longer single out individuals or groups in our society.

  10. Statement #7 Writers of history accurately depict wars and events as they occurred.
