  1. Japanese Struggle to Maintain Independence • To what extent was Japan independent? • To a certain extent, Japan could not be considered successful during occupation because of the scope of America’s control and its dependence on international relations. • What actions made Japan successful? • The purge of government officials and reorganization of government has a positive impact on Japan’s development. • How did the cold war effect Japan’s development? • Post Cold War, Japan lost all their territory gained after 1894 and were occupied by the US and USSR. However, occupation eventually ceased and the government later began to grow and flourish.

  2. Possible Thesis? • Acknowledging that their dependence on trade with other Asian and Western countries would not suffice, Japan reestablished their nation and its ruling ideology in order to once again become a economically successful nation.

  4. Post WWII:American Occupation of Japan • Supreme Commander of Allied Power(SCAP) focused on demilitarization and democratization of Japan. • Japanese leaders were tried for war crimes, even the Emperor Hirohito. • MacArthur clears the Emperor’s name in the Long Telegram (1946)

  5. Japan’s Development and Success • Japan established a new constitution. • The emperor lost all political and military power. • Japan could not lead anymore wars or maintain an army. • Economy began to recover and grow post Korean War (1950-1953) • Standard of living rose • Government (Leaders Democratic Party) became more stable
