  1. Elements • Element- • a pure substance that is composed of the same type of matter throughout and cannot be divided into simpler substances through normal processes

  2. Matter • Matter- • Anything that has mass and takes up space • Solid, liquid, gas, plasma

  3. Plasma • plasma is made by heating a gas

  4. Physical Property • Physical property Examples: • Any characteristic that can be measured or observed without changing the identity of the material • Color, shape, length, mass, density

  5. Metals • Substances that have the physical properties of luster, conductivity, malleability, ductility, and may appear in all three sates of matter

  6. Nonmetals • Substances that have the physical properties of being dull, insulators, brittle, and may appear in all three states of matter

  7. Metalloids • Substances that exhibit some properties of metals and nonmetals

  8. Physical properties • Luster- • Conductivity- • Light is reflected from the surface; shine • How well an object allows electricity to move through

  9. Malleability • Ductility • How well an object canbe hammered into sheets • How easily an object can be drawn into wire

  10. Physical properties • Magnetism • Brittleness • Attracted or not attracted to a magnet • How easily an object breaks

  11. Density • Density • The amount of matter that will fit into a given space • Mass divided by volume • Determines if an item will sink or float

  12. Sonorous • Sonorous • Have a characteristic sound when struck with an object
