Teaching Experience • Eleventh year with Fremont Unified • Have taught grades 4, 5, and 6 • Master’s Degree in Education (M.Ed.) - concentration in Elementary Education • Additional Certifications : Cross-cultural, Language, and Academic Development (CLAD), Guided Language Acquisition Development (GLAD), and Gifted and Talented Education (GATE)

  3. Background Prior to Teaching • Master in Business Administration (MBA) - concentrations in International Marketing and E-Commerce • Manager in the Fraud Prevention Department for a financial corporation

  4. My Aim is to Help Students… • Transition smoothly and successfully into their new classroom • Master the content standards • Exhibit responsibility and accountability • Develop good character • Enjoy their time in 5th grade • Be well prepared for next year (and beyond)

  5. Curriculum • All curriculum is aligned with Content Standards and all lessons taught are aimed toward achieving mastery of the standards

  6. Reading and Language Arts • Treasures Reading Program • Silent reading time is also provided in class • Students are read to on most days • Novels – for enrichment and extension • Currently reading From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg • Reading is part of daily homework

  7. Reading and Language Arts (Continued) • Central areas of focus for the year: • Mastery of Grammar and Language Conventions • Vocabulary Development • Spelling • Reading Comprehension (with an emphasis on making inferences)

  8. Writing • Essays • Summaries • Narratives • Responses to Literature • Persuasive • Expository • Poetry • Book Reports • Research Reports • Letters • Much More!

  9. Writing as a Process • Generate ideas • Write a first draft • Edit work • Revise and rewrite • Share with others • Learn from experience to improve future writing

  10. Mathematics • Everyday Math - taught daily • Various Methods of Teaching Concepts: • Practical Applications • Hands-on Activities • Word Problems • Identifying Patterns & Relationships • Using Charts and Graphs • Analyzing Data • Learning Games • Projects

  11. Social Studies • Content will focus on United States • History • Government • Economics • Geography • Anthropology • Contributions of various peoples • Multiculturalism

  12. Science • Concepts taught in classroom 3 or 4 times a week • Hands-on Science Lab once a week • Areas of Focus • Water Cycle • Weather • Solar System • Life Sciences: Cells, Plants, Human Body • Chemistry

  13. Other Curricular Areas • Character Education • Drug Education (Too Good for Drugs Program) • Environmental Responsibility (Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling) • Service Learning (Bettering the community)

  14. Arts and Music • Art is integrated into core subjects • Two art programs – students will receive art instruction by two art teachers (Mrs. Addison and Mrs. Geschke). Each art teacher will provide a monthly lesson. • Parent Programs • FAME (art and music history instruction) • Music for Minors (music instruction) • Holiday/Art Presentations and Projects

  15. Grading Policy • Based on performance on tests, essays, homework, class-work, projects, and reports: • A = 90-100% • B = 80-89% • C = 70-79% • D = 60-69% • F = <60% • 1/3 of the Science grade comes from performance in Mrs. Warey’s Science Lab Class

  16. Field Trips – General Information • There are several field trips planned for the year • Permission slips will be sent home prior to each trip • Parent chaperones will be needed for some of the trips • Additional field trips may be added if opportunities become available

  17. Homework Policy • Homework is given daily • Weekends: Students encouraged to read and work on long-term projects • Amount of homework given each day will vary somewhat (about 45 minutes is typical) • Students copy homework in planners • Homework updated daily on website

  18. Tests • Study Guides and Practice Tests often given to prepare • Spelling Tests usually occur on Fridays • Tests in other subject areas do not have a designated test day • STAR Testing usually occurs in May – Students in 5th grade are tested in Language Arts, Math, and Science

  19. Progress Reports • Progress Reports will be posted on the class website for the main subject areas as well as for classroom behavior • Included will be: • Performance on assignments and tests • Missing work • Overall grade summary for each subject • Access by entering a password • Updated in real time

  20. Expectations of Students • Help one another succeed; other students are not competition • Go “over, above, and beyond” what is required • Challenge yourself to do your best • Exhibit positive character traits – attitude, effort, and behavior are valued highly in this classroom

  21. Discipline Plan • Incentives and Positive Motivation are Emphasized: • Group points • Extra time for fun learning activities • Certificates and Awards • Positive feedback • Classroom celebrations

  22. Classroom Management • Procedures and policies are in place so that students largely manage themselves • Classroom jobs are given to each student (jobs change monthly) • Goal is to promote more independence and greater responsibility
