  1. Local Area Networks A brief introduction LAN’s

  2. LAN defined • A LAN is a system of computers linked together in a small geographic area providing the ability to share resources and information more easily.

  3. Benefits of a LAN • Maximize resources such as printers, software, or disc space. • Faster communication between computers such as local email. • Easier access to information that may be needed at many different computers. • A LAN can bring virtual worlds together for many to access.

  4. The simplest of LAN’s • In their simplest form a LAN can be just two computers, also called clients, connected together by either cables or a wireless connection. • These connections pass through a device called a hub, router, or switches. • The hub is acts as a connection to other devices such as a server, a printer, or the internet.

  5. Simple LAN Diagram

  6. Home Networks • Home networks (LAN’s) can be very simple to create. Follow the link and view the YouTube Home Network Video to see how a simple network can be put together in a short time.

  7. Cables vs. Wireless • Networks can use either cables or can be wireless. • Cables are more expensive and can be more complicated but they provide better security. • Wireless is cheaper and usually easier to set up but may allow others to get into your system a bit easier.

  8. Cableing • Connecting cables can be as simple as plugging in a telephone. When a network system gets more complex so can the cable work that goes with it. • Now go view the YouTube video on connecting a computer to a simple network.

  9. Software Considerations • Software varies depending upon the hub, router, operating system, and devices used. • Install drivers and follow on screen directions. • Operating systems vary but again simply follow on screen directions usually found in the control panel - network connections, then start the network wizard.

  10. Good Luck and keep it simple
