  2. What is ENC? • Eisenhower National Clearinghouse (1992) • ENC Online • NSDL Projects (2000) • The Learning Matrix • FEDRL • Gender and Science (EDC) • Technology Literacy (ITEA) • Ethnomathematics (PREL) • State Level Projects (2001) • Ohio Resource Center • Standards Plus

  3. Scope of Digital Library Collections • Outstanding undergraduate and K-12 math, science, and technology digital resources • Described at learning object level, e.g. individual lesson plans, applets, or video clips • Featuring learning activities and professional development materials produced with NSF or U.S. Department of Education funds (FEDRL)

  4. Catalog Record Creation Content Specialists select high-quality resources • Not yet part of the NSDL at the learning object level • Fit collection scope and selection criteria Content Specialists & Bibliographic Catalogers build catalog records • Using customized IMS/IEEE Learning Object Metadata (LOM) schema • Examples of fields: Description, Grade Level, Interactivity Level, and Learning Resource Type Editors review Educational Metadata

  5. Native Metadata/Level of Granularity • ENC Online • US MARC • Low granularity • Not exclusively digital resources • NSDL Digital Library Projects • IEEE LOM • High granularity • Exclusively digital resources

  6. Exporting and Harvesting Find our catalog records on these sites: www.nsdl.org www.enc.org

  7. Searching Across Collections

  8. What ENC has learned… • Learning objects require greater cataloging skills and time • Standards have been adopted, but not understood operationally • Extending a standard is a double-edged sword • Loose data as you go from IEEE to DC to MARC • Plan, design, do, redo, redesign, redo…

  9. How much metadata? • Human-generated vs. automatic generation? • What fields are worth the metadata effort? • What fields should be searchable – simple and advanced?

  10. Reference Materials • For further information please see Metadata Reference Kiosk • Learning Matrix About section • Today’s presentation • ENC Indexing Guidelines • Collection Development Policies
