Catalog Record Creation Content Specialists select high-quality resources • Not yet part of the NSDL at the learning object level • Fit collection scope and selection criteria Content Specialists & Bibliographic Catalogers build catalog records • Using customized IMS/IEEE Learning Object Metadata (LOM) schema • Examples of fields: Description, Grade Level, Interactivity Level, and Learning Resource Type Editors review Educational Metadata

  8. What ENC has learned… • Learning objects require greater cataloging skills and time • Standards have been adopted, but not understood operationally • Extending a standard is a double-edged sword • Loose data as you go from IEEE to DC to MARC • Plan, design, do, redo, redesign, redo…

  9. How much metadata? • Human-generated vs. automatic generation? • What fields are worth the metadata effort? • What fields should be searchable – simple and advanced?
