  2. Spider Silk • Spider silk is extremely strong. It is has tensile strength greater then steel and is more flexible. • A 747 Boeing jet could be stopped in flight by a strand that is pencil thick. • This fiber is ultra light, about 25% lighter then traditional polymers.

  3. Spider Silk Cont. • elastic modulus 10-50 GigaPascals, and has tensile strength of 1.1-1.4 GPa • The silk is safe to be used to replace humans body parts giving the user wider range in motion then the traditional replacements available today.

  4. Problems with Spider Silk • It is extremely difficult to create Spider Silk on a commercial scale • Nexia, a Canadian company is hoping to create an unlimited supply of Spider Silk in goat milk. • Nexia has cloned a goat with spider genes.

  5. Webster and Pete • Webster and Pete are the first goats who have this gene. • When they mate their kids are hoped to produce milk which has the silk protein. • The “silk milk” from the goats will then be used to create fibers known as Biosteel.
