  2. What do we want to talk about? • Parenting Teenagers / Young Adults • Way forward after school • What will your sons be doing after school? What will change? • TVs, Mobile Phones and the Internet Discipline and independence(New found freedom) • Authority and Influence

  3. Study & Preparation for KCSE…Expectations • Providing a conducive environment for study at home • Home/school work balance • Encouraging the young teenager • Being there for them • Acceptance of the ability and skills of the young person

  4. College Boys “Wish List” • I wish I knew exactly what course I am cut out for- What I am good at. Passion. Drawing & Architecture • I wish I had more self knowledge- my strengths/weaknesses Peak Performance or equivalent to discover self • I wish I had more exposure about careers before I joined University • I wish I had known that no one would ask me why I didn’t attend classes, how I spend my free time - % attendance to do exams. • I wish I had some information on the social aspects of University life – Exams, Studies, Rules, Friends. You are your person. • I wish I knew that no bell would be rang to go to the next activity I wish I knew how much I still needed guidance

  5. What University or Training College? • Culture of the University? Is your son strong enough to resist? • Location of the University – accessibility transport, security? Abroad or local? • Public or Private; Local or Abroad

How are you teaching responsibility in the different areas of his life? • Hygiene and taking care of his own things? • Sports and exercises? • Entertainment – Movies, Music, Books, TV, Internet • Purity and marriage • Do they have a high opinion of marriage? • Respect and work attitude • Do they like chores? Are they ready for work? • Dress Code

Privileges Come with Responsibility • Allow your sons to make own choices with boundaries (choices have consequences) • Responsibility is taught by parents • Parents make far too many decisions for children on dress, money, food, etc. • Sons should become respectively assertive • Teach a healthy understanding of authority

Influencing your Son after High School • Build strong relationships with your son • Be engaged and listen to his plans / fears about relationships and careers • It is possible for your son to be your friend and to respect you • Schedule regular one-on-one sessions • Remain consistent and show that you trust him • Be transparent about your life • Maintain a healthy marriage!
