  3. Web Hosting • The cyberspace is replete with websites that we frequent daily. Each of these websites is hosted on the web server of a web hosting company. Web hosting is the service provided by these web hosting companies and includes leasing server space to website owners along with providing them the services and the technologies that a website requires for its online accessibility. • Terms such as the “Best Windows Hosting Company” or “Cloud Hosting Company in India” or even the “Best Website Company in India” are used in the context of these web hosting service providers. These web hosting companies provide various web hosting packages which are designed to cater to different types of hosting requirements.

  4. Website Security • The cyberspace is rife with online criminal activities and any website which lacks proper security measures becomes vulnerable to these threats. Website security entails all the measures that are taken to ensure the security of a website in order to keep it safe from any cyber attack or cyber threat. Website security is an ongoing process and is important to avert any cyber threat.

  5. Ways to Ensure Website Security • Using a strong password • Keeping software updated • Using a secure web host • Scanning websites for vulnerabilities • Backing up data • Encrypting login pages (For example, using SSL encryption) Ensuring website security with SSL encryption will be discussed in more detail in the following slides.

  7. SSL Certificate SSL is the abbreviation for Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). An SSL certificate is a kind of Web authentication. It is used to validate the security of a website. This certificate provides identity protection to the users of a website. A certification authority (CA) issues SSL certificates. Web browsers let a user view an SSL certificate related information near the browser search bar. SSL validation can be identified by an icon that shows a locked padlock along with the "https” prefix. This certificate is used for online identity validation. Additionally, it confirms the secure connection between the user’s device and a website. This certificate helps to build trust between a website and its users.

  8. Functions of SSL Certificate An SSL certificate helps secure the following information: • Login credentials • Information that identifies a person • Confidential information, such as related to credit card or bank account information • Legal documents and contracts • Medical records • Proprietary information

  9. Different Types of SSL The different types of SSL certificates are: • Domain Validated Certificates (DV SSL) • Organization Validated Certificates (OV SSL) • Extended Validation Certificates (EV SSL) • Multi-Domain SSL Certificate (MDC) • Unified Communications Certificate (UCC) • Wildcard SSL Certificate These are explained in detail in the following slides.

  10. Domain Validated Certificates (DV SSL) It is usually meant for blogs or for websites that are meant for informational purposes. Those that do not need extra assurance for their website visitors, are the ones to install such a SSL certificate. It is the least expensive, fastest to acquire and has low assurance and minimal encryption. The validation process to obtain this type of SSL certificate is minimal. The process entails proving domain ownership by a website owner by responding to an email or phone call. In it the browser address bar only displays HTTPS along with a padlock. It doesn’t display any business name.

  11. Organization Validated Certificates (OV SSL) Commercial websites need to install this kind of a certificate, which has a high assurance, is the second-highest in price and is used to validate a business’ creditably. Its main purpose is to encrypt the confidential information of the user during transactions. This type of a certificate displays in the address bar, the website owner’s information. This helps to distinguish it from harmful sites. It assures the confidentiality of any customer information that is shared. It requires a website owner to complete a substantial validation process in order to obtain it.

  12. Extended Validation Certificates (EV SSL) This type of a certificate is meant for high profile websites or for applications which have a need for identity assurance as is the case for online payments or login information. When an Extended Validation Certificate is installed, it displays the padlock, HTTPS, the business’ name along with the country on the browser address bar. It is not only the highest-ranking but also the most expensive SSL certificate type. To obtain it, the website owner has to go through a standardized identity verification process which confirms his/her legal right to the particular domain.

  13. Multi-Domain SSL Certificate (MDC) This type of a certificate can secure up to a hundred domain names as well as subdomains using a single certificate. This helps to save time and money. In it the user has control of the Subject Alternative Name (SAN) field. This aids to add, change, and delete any of the SANs as per requirement.

  14. Unified Communications Certificate (UCC) It is considered a multi-domain SSL certificate and was designed for the security of Microsoft Exchange and Live Communications servers. Any website owner can benefit from it, as it allows multiple domain names to get secured on a single certificate. This type of a certificate displays a padlock on the browser.

  15. Wildcard SSL Certificate This kind of a certificate secures a base domain and unlimited subdomains and comes at a much cheaper price when compared to the price for purchasing several single-domain SSL certificates.

  16. Conclusion Ensuring the security of a website is vital and SSL contributes to achieving this goal significantly by encrypting information, providing authentication and building trust. Moreover, Google gives more priority to websites that have SSL certificates which enhances these websites search engine rankings. This encryption technology which is used to create a secure connection between a user’s web browser and a web server, serves as an essential tool for safe data transfer. Apart from this benefit, the security provided by it to the website visitors enhances their user experience of the website.
