  2. Skeletal System Activating Strategy: Think/Pair/Share • When you think of skeletal injuries or conditions what is the first thing that comes to mind? How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  3. Skeletal System Fractures How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  4. Skeletal System Introduction: Working with muscles, the skeletal system assists with movement. Your bones are tough –but even tough stuff can break. Like a wooden pencil bones will bend under strain. If the pressure is too much, or two sudden, bones can snap. When a bone breaks, it is called a fracture. There’s more than one way to break or fracture a bone. A break can be anything from a hairline fracture (a thin crack in a bone) to the bone that is snapped in two pieces like a broken tree branch. There are six types of fractures that we will discuss in this lesson.

  5. Skeletal System Preview Vocabulary: Fracture Simple or closed fracture Greenstick fracture Compound or open fracture Comminuted fracture Impacted fracture Complicated fracture Reduction How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  6. Skeletal System Bone Fracture • A fracture is a break in the bone. The break can be complete or incomplete. • Bone fractures are usually a result of high force impact or stress. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  7. Skeletal System Types of Bone Fractures: • Simple/Closed Fractures A clean break of the bone with little or no break in the overlying skin. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  8. Skeletal System Types of Bone Fractures: • Greenstick A fracture in a young, soft bone in which the bone bends and partially breaks. • occur most often during infancy and childhood when bones are still soft. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  9. Skeletal System Types of Bone Fractures: • Compound/Open Fractures A broken bone that pierces the overlying skin. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  10. Skeletal System Types of Bone Fractures: • Comminuted Fractures The bone is broken into more than two pieces. A crushing force is usually responsible and there is extensive injury to surrounding soft tissue. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  11. Skeletal System Types of Bone Fractures: • Impacted Fractures (compression ) A fracture in which the bones involved are driven into each other. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  12. Skeletal System Types of Bone Fractures: • Complicated Fractures A broken bone that also involves damage to other organs. • Example: a broken rib that punctures a lung. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  15. Skeletal System Stages of Fracture Healing: p. 34 Bones have the ability to repair themselves. What does this mean or look like? YouTube: Broken bone fracture healing How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  16. Skeletal System Fracture Healing: Reduction – the action of making something smaller in amount. (putting the bones back in place)

  17. Skeletal System Fracture Healing: Stage 1: Inflammation (blood clot) Stage 2: Repair (callus formation) Stage 3: Callus Ossification Stage 4: Bone Remodeling How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

Skeletal System Cooperative Learning Opportunity: (CLO) Group #1:Arthritis (pp. 36-39) Group #2:Bone Cancer (pp. 40-43) Group #3:Dislocation (pp. 44-46) Group #4:Osteoporosis (pp.47-51) Group #5:Sprain (pp. 52-56) Group #6:Scoliosis (pp. 57-60) Gallery Walk How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  23. Skeletal System Expectations/Grading: • Cooperative Participation • On-task behavior • Instructions followed • Presentation must be done clearly and correctly Instructions: Read the article and mark the text using the following: • I = Important Information about your injury • S = Symptoms • T = Treatment • P = Prevention After your text is marked discuss and complete your graphic organizer! How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  24. Skeletal System Gallery Walk Instructions: 1. Presenter will stay at their group table to present the information about their injury or condition. 2. Students will rotate clockwise around the room on my signal. 3. All students are expected to take notes to complete their graphic organizers and ask any questions they may have for the presenter. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  25. Skeletal System • Arthritis:Arthritis is a joint disorder in which joints become inflamed and swollen. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  26. Arthritis • Important Information: There are many types of arthritis (over 200): • Osteoarthritis – most common type caused by wear-and-tear damage to joint cartilage. • Rheumatoid arthritis – body’s immune system attacks joints. • Other common types: juvenile, gout, etc. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  27. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  28. Arthritis • Important Information: (continued) • Risk Factors: family history, age, gender, previous joint injury, obesity. • Symptoms: • Pain • Stiffness • Swelling • Redness • Decreased range of motion How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  29. Arthritis • Treatment: focus is on relieving symptoms and improving joint function • Medications • Physical Therapy • Surgery (joint replacement or fusion) How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  30. Arthritis • Prevention: • Some types can not be prevented (genetic predisposition). • Other types can be prevented by not carrying excess weight. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  31. Arthritis Quick Check for Learning: Numbered Heads • What are the two types of arthritis? Osteoarthritis Rheumatoid arthritis • How are these two types different from one another. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  32. Skeletal System • Bone Cancer: abnormal cell growth in a bone (tumor)

  33. Bone Cancer • Important Information: • Commonly affects the long bones of the arms and legs. • Doesn’t include cancers that begin elsewhere and spread (metastasize) to the bone. • Risk Factors: inherited genetic syndromes, radiation therapy for cancer. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  34. Bone Cancer • Symptoms: • Bone pain • Swelling and tenderness near the affected area • Broken bone (weakens bone) • Fatigue • Unintended weight loss How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  35. Bone Cancer • Treatment: • Surgery – remove limb, cancer, or surrounding tissue • Radiation Therapy – high powered beams of energy used to kill cancer cells • Chemotherapy – drug treatment that uses chemicals to kill cancer cells How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  36. Bone Cancer • Prevention: • It is not clear what causes cancer in bones. Some are caused by hereditary factors which are beyond our control. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  37. Bone Cancer Quick Check for Learning: Numbered Heads 1. What is bone Cancer? An abnormal cell growth in a bone (tumor) • How is it treated? Surgery Radiation Therapy Chemotherapy

  38. Skeletal System Dislocation: An injury to the joint in which the ends of your bones are forced from their normal position. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  39. Dislocation • Important Information: • Most common in shoulders and fingers. • Caused by a sudden impact to the joint. This usually occurs following a blow, fall, or other trauma. • Once a joint has been dislocated, it is more likely to happen again. Follow-up with an orthopedic surgeon is recommended. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  40. Dislocation • Symptoms: • Visibly deformed or out of place • Swollen or discolored • Intense pain • Immovable Also, may experience tingling or numbness near or below the injury How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  41. Dislocation How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  42. Dislocation • Treatment: If you suspect a dislocation, seek prompt medical attention. Treatment will include: • Reduction- moves bone back into original position • Immobilization - splint or sling the injury in the position in which you found it. • Surgery– may be needed if the bones do not stay in the correct position or if blood vessels, nerves, or ligament have been damaged. Use RICE (rest, Ice, compression, elevation) to ease pain and swelling. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  43. Dislocation • Prevention: • Take precautions to avoid falls • Play safely – wear protective gear • Avoid recurrence – do strength and stability exercises to improve support of the joint How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  44. Dislocation Quick Check for Learning: Numbered Heads: 1. What is a dislocation? 2. How is it treated by a doctor? (key vocab)

  45. Skeletal System Osteoporosis – A disease characterized by loss of bone mass – bones become weak and brittle. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  46. Osteoporosis • Important Information: • As we age bone mass is lost faster than it is created. The higher your peak bone mass the more bone you “have in the bank” and the less likely you are to develop osteoporosis as you age. • Factors that increase your risk: age (women over 50), race, lifestyle choices (poor diet, do not exercise, drink alcohol in excess, use tobacco), medical conditions and treatments. • Uncontrollable risk factors: gender, age, race, family history, size of body frame. How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?

  47. Osteoporosis • Symptoms: Typically no symptoms in early stages of bone loss. • Bone pain, caused by fracture or collapsed vertebrae • Loss of height over time • A stooped posture • A bone fracture that occurs much more easily than expected How can I keep my skeletal system healthy?
