  1. EMIS 8340 Systems Engineering Tool—applying tools to engineering systems Class #1 Assignments Mark E. Sampson

  2. Remote classes: I’ll follow up with a Q&A session in2 weeks Deliver Scope Statement • You may use the outline used in class today (taken from [Hooks & Farry 2001]) • Sample from Randolph Air Force Base available on class web site… • others available …should include documentation on methods used for identifying stakeholders (context diagram, fishbones,…) and the most critical operational concepts (customer use, and…) We will to do a critical scope (powerpoint version) review with each team at the next class (15 minutes each)

  3. The “Big Picture” • Now that the “need” is identified • Extract/Develop requirements & constraints • Develop functions and architecture that meet the need • Develop alternatives, pick a solution (beware pre-selection error) • Optimize our solution for the need • Deliver the solution… A “capstone” project to bring all of your experience/learning during this program.

  4. Tools Application Case Study • One person from each team (for that individual’s grade) • Brief presentation on a systems problem and how it could be addressed by systems engineering tools/methods/techniques (two TMT’s required) • Presented to the class (<10 minutes) • Paper copy handed to professor, electronic copy posted on Sharing site. …see Ford and Mars Spirit Rover examples

  5. Delivered by next class… • Questions: email mark.sampson@siemens.commsampson@smu.edu • Office/Cell: 469 855-1461
