  1. Keep your mobile subscribers in the know-on the go!April 3, 2013 Gloria Fong gloria@mobilecommons.com

  2. Overview Today we’re going to go over how your organization or company can create a resource that your users can access anywhere; just by texting in. No need to build an expensive app, no need for a smartphone or wi-fi signal-just a phone that can send and receive texts!

  3. Stats! Stats! Stats! Why offer this to your users? • 57.3% of the population has a smartphone1, so you’re leaving almost half the population out when you only have an app! • Nothing for users to download • Average # of times app is opened after download = 12 • (Almost) Everyone texts! 78% of entire population texts3 • 95% of 18-29 year olds • 88% of 30-49 year olds • 82% of 50-64 year olds • Every text message is read, 99% within 15 mins4 • You can reach harder to serve populations that don’t have consistent access to internet, smartphones, etc. 1IDC, "Always Connected How Smartphones And Social Keep Us Engaged" Mar. 2013 2Loyalitics, “26% of apps downloaded in 2010 were used just once”, 2010 3Pew Research Center, “Americans and Text Messaging” Sept. 2011 4Nielsen Mobile 2010

  4. Agenda Agenda: 1) What is an mData? 2) Different types of mDatas 3) Examples of each type 4) Demo of how to set one up 5) Try it out! 6) Questions

  5. What is an mData? • An mData is a text-based campaign that allows you to have your users send a query to a spreadsheet or online webservice

  6. 2 Different Types of mDatas • Location-Based • Find your nearest National Safe Place location • Find your nearest polling place 2. Non Location-Based • Find out if a fish is environmentally sustainable • Find out if an company is LGBTQ-friendly

  7. Location-Based • People text in a keyword to your shortcode (e.g. WHERE to 877877) • They reply with address info that is then geo-coded by Mobile Commons and compared with your database • The user receives the nearest location to the address they texted in

  8. Non Location-Based • People text in a keyword to your shortcode (e.g. SHOP to 30644) • No address information needed, just a search term, such as “company name” (e.g. Apple) • The user’s response is compared to your database and a response is sent back to them based on matches

  9. User Experience • Send out a broadcast that triggers an mData • Have users text in a keyword, and in that opt-in path, ask for a response (people will be subscribers) • Have users text in a keyword and a search term (users will not be opted in)

  10. What if there are no matches? • You can customize autoresponse users receive, such as “reply with your address now to find the nearest location” • You can also customize the “no results found” message if their response does not match anything in your database • Great user experience!

  11. This sounds awesome! But really complicated! Can you fill in the cells of a csv in excel? Can you click a few buttons? Then, you can do this!!

  12. Thanks! Gloria Fong gloria@mobilecommons.com
